how to officialize a separation?

i live in NoVA. Wife and I don't agree on anything and have nothing to talk about except our kids.
I live in the basement and have no physical contact. I would like to get officially separated. How do we do that in NoVA ? |

| Call an attorney and get a separation agreement. File it with the court in your divorce proceedings. It will be effective as of the date you choose. Since you are living in the house, that might be trickier. Are either of you planning to move out? |

| my wife lost her job 2 years ago and she's having a hard time finding one. For financial reasons, I can't easily move out. My ideal situation would be to be able to move to a place where we both could be in our own smaller house close to each other so we could still parent and be close to our kids. The only way I found so far to be able to do that is to all move to a less expensive city. She does not want to do that because of the great opportunities in the DC area. She's right but we can't continue living together like 2 strangers in the same house. I love my kids to death but I am afraid 1 day I'll have enough and just leave for another city or country. |

Yes, you can be separated in the same house in VA, I know two couples who did it this way. However, I don't know what paperwork they had to do. |
