Has anyone developed food allergies as an adult?

Anonymous
I posted recently about some unknown reaction I've been having which has been diagnosed as hives and eczema but now I'm starting to wonder if I have developed a food allergy. Several times I have had the reaction (red, puffy, itchy, swollen face/chest/arm/neck) it has been after eating eggs. I am over 40 and have no known allergies other than environmental - is it possible to develop a food allergy at this age?

I developed a new severe food allergy in my 20s. I don't think it's common, but it's very possible. Make an appointment with an allergist and avoid eggs in the meantime.

Yes-- I developed a couple in my 30s. One was pretty hard to diagnose because it's a food additive.

Yeah. Developed allergy to sea food with my second pregnancy and it did not go away. And I LOVE seafood.

Yes but they are still trying to figure out to what. A couple of weeks ago I was out to dinner and was drinking a margarita and my face and chest broke out in bright red spots and I didn't realize it (dimly lit restaurant so DH couldn't tell). I kept drinking the margarita and my throat completely closed up and I could barely breathe. I'm a nurse and knew exactly what was happening especially once DH told me my face and chest were all broken out. I told him to call 911 and yell that I was going into anaphylactic shock. Diner in the restaurant actually had an epi pen and I injected myself. Absolutely terrifying experience.

After I gave birth, I couldn't drink milk any more. Horrible stomach cramps. (I used eat cereal all the time.)

Now, in my 40ss, I have a reaction to meat with nitrates, e.g., salami, bacon. My lips puff up. Same with avocado.

I have weird eczema as well that doesn't seem to be connected to the food I eat. I've been to several dermatologists and one allergist. The allergist gave me more insight.

Are the foods different now--more antibiotics and animal byproducts given to animals, GMO plants, etc?

My mom is allergic to eggs, not sure when it developed, and is careful about getting flu shots because some have egg proteins.

It's DC. My allergist says it's basically an enormous cesspool of allergens and that tons of people move here and develop all kinds of allergies.

My father was diagnosed with allergies to approx 10 food items (including peanuts) in his 60's. Eczema and asthma were his symptoms.

I developed an allergy to citrus (oranges and tomatoes) when I was a teenager. I broke out in hives from head to foot with facial swelling...then two years later it was gone.

I developed a dairy allergy that lasted for 6 years in my late 20s. I broke out in hives everytime I ate dariy. It was awful. My doctor says you can absolutely grow in and out of allergies (I was horribly allergic to dogs and wool as a child and grew out of both in my late teens). He says it is especially common for women as we have more hormonal fluxuations. Every now and then I get a random case of the hives and dread the idea that I might be dealing with another food sensitivity of allergy.
