We need some window treatments for a new addition. I don't know what we're going to want long-term (and we're out of money ) so I can't spend too much. That seems to narrow it down to honeycomb shades or blinds because roman shades are too much. What's your opinion? Which would look better in that combo kitchen/family room? They would be white, if that makes any difference.

| I hate honeycomb shades. I like the Levolor fake wood style from Home Depot/ Lowes. |

If you like DIY at all, you can do better than blinds from a home improvement store. I think this is cheaper than blinds, but can't remember their price.
Get black out roller shades from Home Depot cut to the right size for your window. (They do this at the store.) Then cover them with fabric that complements your decor from a place like fabric.com of Joann's. This is super easy and requires only spray adhesive and maybe some fabric guard to protect the fabric once it's done. You can do a ribbon trim with fabric glue if you feel like making it a bit fancier. Google DIY roller shade. Here is one site explaining this. This isn't the one I used when I did it, but it's the same basic idea. The shades run less then $10 and you can get a yard of decent fabric for $10. Add in some spray adhesive, some fabric glue and ribbon, spread that cost over several shades, and your cost is about $25 per shade, less if you get a good deal on fabric.. http://thediymommy.com/make-a-no-sew-fabric-covered-roller-shade/ |
| I was really happy with SelectBlinds.com, which I learned about on this board. They are always having a "sale" for something like buy 3 get one free. We bought blackout, cordless honeycomb shades for our nursery and they are still great 2 years later (though one occasionally has issues opening). I recommend them. |
I am not the op, but you just completely solved my window treatment problems. Thank you!!!

| I'm doing the DIY roller shades too - I have the same problem. But, I am buying a roller shade kit from ebay (they are wood - its a seller in Maine). They are $14 each. I ordered fabric and glue online. So, they won't be like blackout. I want to let some light thru so im just using the fabric. I hope they work. If not, I can use the same fabric to make a short curtain. I would do ones with the big metal circles, like circles cut in the fabric sort of thing (not hanging on top). |
These are so cute. I want to do them too but vinyl is pretty nasty from a health perspective. If anyone finds good non vinyl base shades, please post! |

The ebay kit a PP mentioned uses wooden rollers--no vinyl, just the fabric you supply.
