Chged jobs (& don't yet qualify for short term disability post baby) - can I apply for DC benefits?

Hi everyone

I moved to CA and started a new job while 6 mos. pregnant. Since I won't have worked enough hours to pay for short term disability here by the time the kiddo arrives, I was looking into whether my time in DC would allow me to apply for the DC benefit.

Can anyone share resources or know-how on how to do this? I worked in DC from Sept 2012-August 2014 full-time and baby is due November 2014.

I'm not sure what the "DC benefit" is, but when I was looking at short term disability plans, they all had a year long waiting period between when you got the insurance and when you could first use it.

Idk, but my sister kept collecting VA unemployment even after she moved to another state.

I assume you are referring to the DC benefit that enables you to take 16 weeks of FMLA, which is the only one I can think of in your situation. All that enables you to do is take 4 additional weeks of time off when you have the baby and it is UNPAID. You would need to be working in DC for the benefit to apply. Hate to say it, but you are SOL for any pay while on maternity leave unless you have accrued vacation or have an arrangement with your new employer for paid maternity leave.

Where I used to work in DC people would go on short term disability during maternity leave. Of course this won't help op. But it is something that is done.

I don't think so since short term disability is an insurance bar some but not all employers pay for. We do not have it at my workplace.

What "DC benefit" are you talking about?

The state of CA has short term disability laws that DC does not. There is no DC benefit that is comparable to what CA offers by law. You would need private disability insurance and it's too late to get that.

Its called welfare - TCA/TANIF, food stamps, etc.

California has paid parental leave so I'm not sure what kind of DC benefit you're looking for.

OP, I'm with PPs. What "DC benefit" could you possibly be referring to??? If you clarify that we can answer your question.
