I thought Nov 3-4 were student holidays in FFX and we booked a trip for that weekend. We don't get back until 8pm on Nov 4. Just realized those are conference days and not student holidays.
Are teachers flexible or do all conferences have to be on the same day? |
| I just checked the school calendar again and it says, "Teacher Workday. Student Break". If it said parent teacher conference day, I would not have booked a trip on the same day. |
| There's another thread in which someone is claiming that FCPS isn't requiring conferences this fall. |
OP here. We got a reminder for back to school night and a note that said we should sign up for conferences Nov 4. Hope I am reading it wrong. My child just started kindergarten and it is important to me to go to the parent teacher conference. |
| You should be able to set up a conference time on another day (probably before school) with the teacher. Just ask nicely. |
| You can set up a conference with your child's teacher anytime. It just might have to be before or after school, but you may get more then the 10 minutes you typically get on "conference day". |
Chill. You can meet another time. No biggie. |
This is correct. Teachers are not required to hold conferences on Nov. 4. |
| Our ES said there is no longer a day dedicated to conferences. Instead, teachers will schedule before or after school. |
Teachers can't be required to hold them before or after their hours. They can choose to hold them at that time. |
Maybe you should consider your child's education before recreational activities |
Maybe you should cut a K parent a little slack....even those of us who have been in FCPS for years are a little baffled by the changes this year, so how would a new parent know that conferences are held on a day that is not labeled as a conference day on the official school calendar? |
Yes, conferences are on Nov 4. You can schedule an appt for anytime though (that is good for teacher and you). Don't worry about it. |
| We have traveled on that weekend for the past 3 years. Great time for a trip with low prices and low crowds! Most teachers, when that was a conference day, would not have enough slots for the whole class and would have a handful of slots for before/after school during the previous week or later that week. Enjoy your trip--we had planned one this year for the 4 day weekend in January instead and then the late changes to the calendar moved the Thursday to a Monday off--now the kids will miss school AND I will have to have coverage for them on Monday. |
| Spouse of a teacher. Yes, conferences are available one day this year. If you can't make it that day, most teachers try to accommodate parents. That having been said, there is no requirement for teachers to meet with parents outside of a teacher's contract hours, so if teachers do this, they are doing it on their own time in order to help you out - so be thoughtful and appreciative when a teacher does this. Teacher's have lives/families too, and it cuts into their personal time. I'm a full time working parent too, so I understand that it's hard to get to conferences, but I just wish people would be more thoughtful when they take up DH's time in order to not be inconvenienced themselves. |
