Have you used a career counselor or life coach?

Was it helpful? What sort of issues do they help with? How did you find a good person? Are they industry specific or generalists?

I'm working with a life coach now. Best decision I ever made. In the last 3 months I've made big changes at home and at work as a result of working with her. I really needed the time/space to think through some things and she provided that.

So, how would this be different than a therapist?

I've done therapy and working with a life coach felt very different for me. In therapy I was trying to get to the root of my "issues". With the life coach I created specific goals and worked with her to achieve them. And, she didn't diagnose me along the way .

Basically they just ask you a lot of questions and tell you what you already know.

New poster here and I sort of agree with this. "Life coach" is a made up term designed by people looking to prey on lost souls.

But what about a career counselor? Has anyone used one and has it been helpful for them? Not OP, but I'd also be interested in knowing anyone's experience with a career counselor.

I'll be your life coach. $200/hour.

Yes, it was incredibly helpful. I worked with a legal specialist when leaving a law firm after 4 years. I had ended up at biglaw like a total sheep - just following the crowd out of a top law school - and hated it. She helped me parse what was important to me in a job (there are so many variables - types of work or skills needed, life balance, pay, social interaction, room for personal growth, mobility, etc - no job has it all) and then execute. That was 8 years ago and I have since left the job I took after working with her but I am in a great place thanks to that experience and also far more sensitive to what i want and how to find it in future moves.

I do think that if you are a lawyer you have to find someone who works primarily with lawyers and understands what types of jobs are available in the field. Such people do exist.

I have been considering using a career coach. PP who was an attorney, would you recommend yours? I am an attorney I. Private practice looking to get out but struggling with what to do(and what I want to do). Thanks.

waste of time. Life Coaches are mostly older workers that have been fired and replaced with younger workers and are now trying to start a new career by helping people. Like having another spouse but no sex.
