Out of state interview

Anonymous
I am applying to a job out of state -- think low/mid level position at a huge corporation. I had one interview with an HR person and have an interview with the HR hiring manager this week via phone. Do you think I would be hired by the hiring manager via phone or do you think I would have to fly to the headquarters and have an in person interview as well. Its sort of unclear to me.

It really depends on what level within the huge corporation as to whether or not they require you to interview in person.

Corporations are very wedded to their titles. I think it's safe to say that Manager level and above have to interview in person.

i've always had large corps be really methodical and good with process - out of state means paid flight, hotel, etc.

and these were for low/mid level jobs.

small consulting firms on the other hand (100-150 person operations) are the awkward ones in the interview process.

I'm guessing they will want to meet you in person. In my pre-2010 experience that meant they'd pay all expenses. Today, not so sure. I can only speak to my experience at my current job. My company (large corporation) frequently hires entry-mid-level positions and unless you had a skill set we desperately need would likely say to you something like, "when will you next be in town" to try to avoid paying your travel expenses. We did recently hire two people via phone interviews but one was very junior and the other was an ex-employee wanting to come back, so a known quantity.

For a manager level position, I would be surprised if you *weren't* asked to visit. The only question in my mind is whether this would be a "real" interview, or more of a "meet and greet".

I would expect to meet in person, for them to pay, and to be invited only if I was their #1 candidate (or #2 and #1 turned them down).

Really? I've interviewed at primarily fortune 500 (well maybe more like fortune 100) firms over the past 3-4 years for low and mid level jobs and they all were really solid about flying you out and putting you up in a hotel and per diem (for onsite interviews).

The firms i've noticed that had a poor candidate set up were the small to medium sized private consulting shops.

And i'm not a CS person either so it isn't like my skillset is one in a million or mission critical.
