DCUM name

This is an unimportant question, but I noticed the URL did not contain "and dads." Did you add that on to the name after the site was created initially, or the URL wasn't avilable, or it was too long...? Thanks! And Jeff, you rock!

DCUM started as a mailing list (which still exists) and we never in our wildest dreams expected it to amount to much of anything. When my wife registered the domain name, she and her friend whose idea was the origin of the mailing list had decided to call it "DC Urban Moms" because it was only aimed at arranging get-togethers for new moms. However, my wife had been working full time doing database administration and had followed a strict naming convention for tables, fields, and databases using only singular names. So, sort of automatically, she registered "dcurbanmom.com" instead of "dcurbanmoms.com". But, because we never expected the list to amount to anything, we decided not to bother registering another domain name. Pretty quickly, the mailing list started to included dads, but we decided it was too late to changes things. When my wife designed the site logo, she added the "and Dads" to recognize that Dads had become involved.

We have registered "urbanparents" .com/.org/.net and may transition to them at some point. However, DCUM (which we used instead of DCUMaD) and dcurbanmom.com have become so much a part of our brand that we are reluctant to make changes. You should be able to connect with www.urbanparents.com if that would make a difference (note, it will change back to dcurbanmom.com once you connect).

Ha! Cool bit of history. Not OP but I appreciate the explanation, Jeff!

Not OP but thanks Jeff. I don't really mind having the site name only mention moms (although I like having the "and dads" on the logo)-- what I mind is when people assume only moms post here.

Oh, cool! OP here, thanks, that's very interesting.

Will show this to my husband, who frequently makes snarky comments about DCUM only being for women.
