| That's whet killed bob Marley. So use sunscreen. |
| Thank you for the PSA |
| From the "learn something new every day" file - I always thought Bob Marley died of brain cancer. As OP notes, it was melanoma that spread to his brain. |
Debatable. Marley had melanoma under a toenail. Not exactly an area with much sun exposure, or one where people apply sunscreen anyway. |
I'm AA and I have moles on my foot, sides of my hands, etc. |
| YEP. I believe there is a PSA right now in the AA community that skin cancer is equal opportunity. |
So this PSA is only visible and sting where black people live? Where is this mysterious OZ like "black community"? |
From the Mayo Clinic: "Melanomas can also occur in areas that don't receive much sun exposure, such as the soles of your feet, palms of your hands and fingernail beds. These hidden melanomas are more common in people with darker skin." |
I'm curious, are you white or black? Because I'm white, but I have definitely stumbled upon channels and literature that are clearly targeted to someone else. |
Read the post I was responding to, poster says they are playing in "the black community", that's line saying only black folks' TV's air the ads. She did not say ads "targeting " a particular demographic , big difference. We need to learn to check the narrative , there is no one black community, but there are lots of black people and , yes, a PSA can be directed towards that demographic. |
| Better than sunscreen, is to just not spend extensive amounts in the sun. Cover exposed skin, stay in the shade. Spending 5-15 minutes in the sun is not a big deal, but avoiding prolonged exposure is ideal. |
My point exactly. Skin cancer that primarily affects dark-skinned black people is not necessarily prevented with sunscreen. The woman in this article also had melanoma on her foot. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/many-blacks-are-unaware-of-a-skin-cancerthat-primarily-affects-dark-skinned-people/2014/08/04/14164ada-e68a-11e3-afc6-a1dd9407abcf_story.html |
| Bob Marley's father was white. |
Um okay....I posted "the black community" because I noticed ads with black models that stated something to the effect of "Be aware that we can get skin cancer too...cover up this summer and get your kids covered with sunscreen." I'm sorry I offended you with my word choice but wow, this seems like such a benign thing to take offense over. |
| But isn't sunburn and melanoma less likely if one is black? |
