| My dd started K on Monday and I really do not like her K teacher. Primarily because so many parents from previous years complained about her. I want to change my dd to a different k class! The principle is known for siding with the teachers (naturally) and most likely will not approve it. What can I do who can I go to above the principal? The teacher is known for yelling at the kids. |
| This is a common problem and hard to solve. Students and parents have been complaining about our art teacher for years. The students hate and dread art. Why does the school system keep her on? |
| Does DD like the teacher? |
Unfortunately it can be very hard to fire someone! |
| Dd was born with a urinary issue and goes to the bathroom at least once a hour. I discussed it with the teacher and the school nurse and provided documentation from her pediatrician. Today dd was told to wait until the end of class to go to the bathroom because she just went. I am sure it is somewhat disruptive but SHE HAS TO GO! Dd came back home and her water bottle and juice were untouched she did not drink anything at school because she did not want to urinate! |
| Op here I don't want her fired I just want my dd in a different k class and wonder how to accomplish this in MCPS. And if anyone wonders this is a school in one of the W clusters. |
NP here. This is no lie. My daughter was in K and was having bowel issues by end of September. We asked if she could have a water bottle in her cubby or table to encourage drinking. That she wasn't used to only drinking about 6oz at lunch during the whole day. I was told no - school policy. Fast forward to end of November and we were having bouts of dry heaving and anxieties with bathroom. Tried getting in as much water/juice from 5-8pm. Took her to pediatrician again. X-ray showed a 70% bowel obstruction r/t dehydration and anxiety/pain with school bathroom Guess who got the school's policy to allow water bottles in K 10yrs ago? Be proactive. Be sincere. A good teacher will listen. |
| Pp your story is heartbreaking but also encouraging! Please share what doors you knocked on to get the policy changed. |
| Unfortunately you can not go to the principal and say you want your child's class changed because you have heard bad things about the teacher. You need to have concrete reasons why this teacher is a problem for your specific child...which you are unlikley to have on the first week of school. Unfortunately, all kids draw the short straw some years.. |
Why is this relevant? |
|
You can not go to the principal to get your class changed because you have heard "bad things". If they let your kid move then what would prevent everyone else from asking the same thing? Or should only people that are less involved have their kid in the "bad" class?
I have learned that "good" for one kid is not necessarily "good" for another. And same with "bad". A few times my kids have had the "best" teacher and had a bad year. If your child gets yelled at then start talking to the teacher and above then. |
OP here it is relevant, because during these discussions people start asking which school it is. |

We're kind of in the same boat except it's not us hearing bad things it's us observing her interactions with people. At both the open house and at back to school night she ignored several current parents who were lining up to talk to her to schmooze with PTA moms whose kids had graduated from her class but stopped in to say hello.
It's not just like she said hi to them. Both time these were15- 20 minute conversations and used up all of the available time. This is a school where the parent organizations give teachers grants conferences and funding for laptops, etc. so it makes sense from one standpoint that she should be nice to them but I was disturbed by how it was at the expense of current students. |
| My DD had UTI issues last year in K. The doctor recommended she keep a water bottle with her all day long to encourage drinking. I talked to her teacher and she was completely supportive and promised to encourage her to go to the bathroom once an hour. It depends on the teacher. We couldn't have had a better experience. |
Yeah, it's shocking how much of this immature, adolescent behavior goes on between schools and the PTA moms. That is precisely why I boycott the PTA and any other "ask" that come home from the school in the backpacks. Why aren't there more grown ups in the PTA? |
