Is the Mexican Riviera safe for families?

Anonymous
DH is uncomfortable flying to Cancun and taking a cab/shuttle to the Riviera Maya. I want to stay at Rosewood Mayakoba, which looks amazing. DH is ok with the dates, prices and resort but does not want to book if there is any chance of violence.

Has anyone traveled to this region recently?

Please help me convince DH.

you have no worries. The resorts are the safest place to be. I have gone to maya rivieria at least 5 times in the last 8 years. the cabs at airport are shuttles on very busy roads and are safe. (prepare for at least an hour ride though to mayakoba). its fine.

I wouldn't travel in Mexico now.

No worries - you should be fine. The violence is among the drug cartels and rarely extends to others plus it is located along the border and in the states of Guerrero and Michoacan - far, far away from the Yucatan. Enjoy your trip!

OP here. All the resorts in this area look so amazing. The last time I was in Cancun was for partying in college.

They are amazing resorts but there is no way my husband eould ever let us travel there now. He is someone who's profession allows him to be 'in the know' and he would never allow a trip there right now. I wanted to go to the Excellence in riviera maya. God forbid you get sick and have to leave the resort.

It's safe. We took a family vacation there a few weeks ago.

Ohhhhh my gosh- go!!!! This is my favorite resort. We've been to Rosewood twice in the last 2 years- first when DS was 8 months and again when he was 1.5. Amazing place. Incredibly safe. Best breakfast ever!

I'd probably avoid it if I could.

Can you plan for a resort elsewhere instead?

PS - definitely use the Rosewood transportation. It's pricey but worth it to not have the hassle at the airport.

You don't know what you're talking about. It's safe to leave the resorts. We have been 10+ times in 4 years. You can absolutely leave the resort and go downtown Playa del Carmen. Very family friendly and safe. I did get sick there when I was pregnant and received top notch healthcare by a German/Mexican doctor.

Mexico is a big country, but this area is safe.

This is my DH as well, we won't be traveling to Mexico anytime soon. I would find an island.

Incredibly safe. The Rosewood has a huge, incredibly safe, incredibly well staffed property, and they pick you up at the airport. It's more dangerous to take a taxi into DC.

Won't Rosewood pick you up in a Mercedes? Do that.
