I actually know someone who several years ago cancelled a business trip in Mexico City due to safety concerns and the next year rescheduled -- and they all flew into Cancun.

Mexico is not stable now, that is clear, but I would consider traveling to Cancun/Maya Riviera.

A friend of mine was HS was killed down there - at the resort - earlier this year. I definitely wouldn't go.

That site links to the US Department of State website which indicates "Quintana Roo: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum are major cities/travel destinations in Quintana Roo - No advisory is in effect."

It's safe. Just as safe as going into DC as a tourist. Don't be dumb and you will be fine. Not even a need to "stay on the resort" like you do in Jamaica. I've rented a car and have driven to Tulum even.

Yeah, real safe. Remember this from last year?

CANCUN, Mexico -- Six people were strangled to death and one decapitated in the southern Mexican tourist resort of Cancun on Sunday, the state's deputy attorney general said, in the latest mass killing to strike the city in the last few weeks.

Police found the bodies of the five men and two women in a shack in the outskirts of Cancun, a major tourist destination on Mexico's Caribbean coast, that has largely escaped the drug-related violence that has racked Acapulco, a faded tourist destination on the Pacific coast.

"It looks like the victims were independent drug dealers without any links to any specific cartel," said Juan Ignacio Hernandez, deputy attorney general of Quintana Roo state.

Last month six people died and five were injured after two men opened fire in a bar on the outskirts of Cancun.

In a separate incident, police on Sunday found the body of another man in Cancun who had been gagged, bound and wrapped in sheets.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has promised to put an end to the violence that exploded after his predecessor, Felipe Calderon, launched a military-led attack on the warring cartels.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since 2007.

So you expect the tourist areas to have zero crime? Mexico isn't Walt Disney World. I didn't see any reference to wealthy whites being plucked from their luxury resorts in CancĂșn.

I agree.... very safe in Mexico. We also rented a car and drove into Playa del Carmen and to Tulum. In Jamaica we definitely felt like we should stay in the resort, unfortunately.

We were in that area a few months ago. Felt very safe and had a great time. The beach was amazing!

Sorry - friend from HS. Yes, murdered at a resort in Mexico. I believe in Cancun.

And I've been to Mexico several times myself before and felt safe, but won't go anymore.

The way the whole investigation was handled sounded shady.
