Which is your favorite? DH and I have been buying Starbucks Cafe Verona and we really love it, but I'd love to find a cheaper alternative. We like dark roasts and complex, non-bitter flavors.
Also, does your Costco have a grinder? Ours used to but it seems to have gone missing. I can't deal with grinding coffee at 5 am. |

Try Majorga. Cheaper than Starbucks and makes great espresso.
The Costco stores that I know of in Beltsville and Wheaton do not have grinders. |

Grind your coffee the night before. Problem solved.
And yes, Costco's dark roasts are good. |

We grind our coffee the night before, but one Costco, Pentagon City, I visit has grinders. I think Springfield does, too. I like the Mayorga Cafe Cubano fairly well (also it's local, bonus points!), but I LOVE the Mayorga Mocha Java (not flavored, just a good roast) which they have sometimes. I also really like the Gold Coffee Kenya Nyeri AA Single Estate. It's very, very good. A very clean but full bodied cup. I'm not sure how they compare in price to SBUX, but I think they are slightly more than Costco. I'll confess I've never tried the Costco coffees! The smell of them roasting (burning?) it in Pentagon City is enough to turn my stomach every time.
It's interesting that you like Cafe Verona but not bitter coffees, because I think most Starbucks dark roasts are fairly bitter. I also think grinding coffee ahead of time makes it more bitter. I really like the Capresso Burr Grinder. It's not really expensive for a Burr Grinder but does a great job. Good if you like different types of brewing methods. Like we do French Press on the weekends and drip during the week. Occasionally pull out the espresso machine. |
| I was looking to spend less on Costco coffee too, and tried the Kirkland decaf that comes already ground in a coffee can. It was not as smooth. |
| Wheaton has a grinder. Its at the front of the store. |
| We like the Kirkland Columbia, silver & green package with some animal in the front. |
| Love Mayorga cafe cubano! I also recently tried Peets and it was good too. I think the blend was Mr. Something? |
+1. My go-to coffee for years. I haven't been in awhile; didn't know they had Peets. I love Peets. Might make me drift from my local. (Mayorga is a startup based in Rockville.) |
DH has a similar like in terms of coffee style. He used to grind his own the morning of and then started doing it the night before after DS was born. He liked the Kirkland Columbia for whole bean for self-grinding, but switched to the Kirkland pre-ground in the bag with pink around the edge partially for ease and partially for cost. He seems to be really happy with it and has been using it for about 2 years. I would weigh in about taste, but don't drink coffee

| We go through a bag a week, so we just get the Mayorga, whatever medium blend they have, and have Mayorga grind it for us at purchase. |
