Everyone who is a proponent of opening up the states, businesses, school has said that otherwise healthy individuals should be able to return to normal lives and anyone who is high risk or feels they are high risk should stay isolated to protect themselves. The same policy needs to hold true for voting. Those who are otherwise healthy should go to the polls and vote. Those who are high risk or feel endangered should continue to isolate and be allowed to request a mail-in ballot.

It's absolutely ridiculous that my sister who had liver failure, and is on a battery of drugs that weaken her immune system and has been told by her doctors to isolate as much as possible and to avoid people because she is extremely high risk, is not allowed to request a mail-in ballot and instead is going to lose her right to vote because her state will only allow her to vote by going out to a polling station and standing in a long line with people, half of whom will not wear masks because they feel it is a violation of their personal rights. So, she will not vote. And she lives in a critical election state.

The particular game here is that Texas has 254 counties, most of which are tiny. But also five counties with populations of over one million.

So the one drop-off point per county rule delivers a huge advantage to residents of those small rural counties.

Awful. Also awful is that Texas doesn't allow mail-in voting unless you are elderly, sick, out of town or in jail. Fear of Covid doesn't count.

The way to avoid voter suppression was to realize we were in this overblow COVID deal for the long haul. At that point, the states, all of them, should have set up in person voting starting in August. You don't contract COVID by voting in person. Just like you don't get COVID going to Walmart or Home Depot from the checkout keypad. It just is not a thing. Spare me the nonsense about how voting in person is itself some form of voter suppression.

If you are truly not in your polling district, then you use the absentee ballot system.

Easy. But, nothing can possibly be easy because nobody wants anything to actually work. Instead, we have to freak out about voting in-person like it is the second coming of the plague.

The result of all this is going to be litigation in each swing state, and the only winners are going to be the Election Lawyers. I guess their ship finally came in.

But, that is not at all representative of what is happening.

Where on earth is your sister that an absentee/mail-in ballot is not available and has not been available for months? I have a hard time believing this story.

And, in any event, you are talking about a rounding error in terms of the number of voters anyways. Justifying some sea-change in the way voting is done to protect the system based on extremely limited numbers of people makes zero sense.
