I just had to comment on this - even though it was awhile back. I think that people who have more than one child are a drain on the earths natural resources and should have any child after the first sent to Africa to be used as food. We should follow China's lead. 1 child per family! Oh and you're an idiot obviously. |
Well said! My child (besides going to a good school) lives in the city, has a nice house, has been to Europe several times and is bilingual. He can tell you about how different people are from around the world. OH THE HORROR!!!! I'm sorry I didn't have a second child so I couldn't afford these things for him. Yes, I should drag him out to Manasas, send him to public school with a bunch of white kids all the same, take no vacations where he learns other cultures and have a sibling for him to fight with. Good point! I'll get right on that. |
My DD has mentioned once or twice in the last two years that she wanted a sibling. So clearly not having another is tantamount to child abuse. Of course, she also wants a horse and a "pink car with yellow peace signs on it", too, neither of which are forthcoming. We really are the worst parents ever. |
Bah! Having a single child is extremely selfish! After all, who will take care of you when you're old? |
I had three because I was trying to insure that I had at least one who would feel bad and not put me in a nursing home! |
are you my husband?? jk, but seriously, we have the same life. It's not bad, it's downright awesome. And we own our place (2br/2ba 1400 sq ft. townhouse in south arlington). My neighborhood is super walkable, safe, twelve minutes from capitol hill, great schools, public transportation.... We make less than 150k p/yr, I guess we're good with our money? But not really...we eat out like crazy and drive two gas guzzlers. If anything, we could save a lot more than we do. The only thing I'd say is a challenge is that we have zero vacation time, and not very much extra money to travel. Not bad for two people under 35. |
It is a short commute for those who think their only option to move where the commute would be much longer than that. Most of the people I work with may be geographically closer but have worse commutes. And I said that a typical day is 1 hour, a good day is 45 minutes. And we both were working in DC prior to the new gigs and our commutes were about 30 minutes. Depending on where you work (and as we have experienced that location can change despite best efforts to live close to your job), yes it is a viable option that is a better commute than many other areas in the region. |
If you really think that is your only option, you are not very creative. Unless you work in an equidistant location between two amazing jobs, you have plenty of options of better commutes. I hate it when people claim that they have no options when in reality, they just don't care if they waste much of their lives commuting. This is not to say that there aren't people that don't have options, you just should not count yourselves among them. |
Commute is only one factor in the package of things people are seeking...affordable housing is another and at the time there were no comparable houses at the same price within the same distance and proximity to DC. It was the best property for the money and a good commute to DC jobs at the time. We bought here before the salaries got to this level and when our jobs were in DC...of course if we were making what we are now back then we would have had more options for a starter home....I definitely agree with that. We probably would have bought in DC but incomes were too low back then to get what we wanted in the city. |
If you choose house/lot size over commute, this area generally isn't pleasant. If you prioritze the reverse, it becomes an extraordinarily good place to raise children. |
We haven't moved yet, but I think that many big cities are like this. We are moving from Los Angeles, where rent is a lot more expensive and we paid 1600 a month for preschool... |
