I grew up here and I remember .....

I grew up in Herndon in the 80s-90s. I remember:

When going from Herndon to Tyson's took only 15-20 min by car on Rt. 7, and there was no Toll road.
The only movie theater in town was a 50 cents a ticket one in Dranesville (Herndon/Sterling), and the movie was at least a year old. You had to go to Tyson's to see a new release.
There was no Cascades Pkwy, Loundon Greenway, Reston Town Center, or Worldgate Cinema
I worked at Hechinger as a cashier--loved it.
Eating at Bob's Big Boy in Reston for brunch, or at Friendly's on Elden St. (there's a Pollo Campero there now--that pretty much sums it up.)
When Herndon Parkway didn't go all the way around town.
Eating Jerry's Subs with my sister after high school in the shopping center near my house.
Listening to and loving the GREASEMAN on DC101, and WAVA 105.1 was the cool station for a while, as was WPGC 95.5 which is still around but not really for my demographic anymore.
The 1983 Redskins superbowl win over the Dolphins (27+17=44 John Riggins number, whohooo!)
1984 superbowl loss to the Raiders
etc, etc etc....

When they really were insensitive enough to name a fast food joint, Sambo's. It was in the parking lot of Hechinger. (I bet you were a cute cashier.)

When Reston was the first fully cabled community in the US!! (Warner Cable in the Scope Building on Whiele and Sunrise Valley)

When the only tall building this side of Tysons was the Reston International Center!
The site of the current Reston Town Center was a bunch of dirt bike trails.

When I showed up with a buddy of mine (African American) at the Herndon Moose as was told we were not welcome. Never went back. I mean, I knew they were a bunch of rednecks, but geese!! Got no problem with a redneck (mine is kind of rosy) but does not mean you gotta be ignorant!

When the police were called to the Scope Building because some employee was making dirty movies after hours on one of the Warner Cable production sets and one of the "actors" raised a stink.

My first chili dog at the Vienna Inn in the 70's. I think they have kept the same furniture. It used to be like a drive in the country between Reston and Vienna.

WHFS - great station in the 70's
-Damian (Einstein) car accident on Pyle Rd behind my house - gave his voice some character
-Weasel and his dang voice. My buddy won a contest and was able to play a radio show with Weasel. My buddy was better.
-Surf (Cerph) and his smooth voice
Introduced me to VanMorrison, Ronstadt, Lofgren, Taj Mahal, ......so much good music. Would love to get some old tapes of HFS.

My first job at the World Futurist Society on Woodmont Avenue!!! I was in 8th grade. Stuffed envelopes and ran the copy machine. Even made love to my girlfriend one night when I was responsible for locking up.

Good for you but I doubt you "made love" in 8th grade. More like you shot off in about 30 seconds and she was like, "Is it in yet?"

Cute! Well, I was blessed/cursed in that making love for me and my dear-wonderful-beautiful-amazing-intoxicating girlfriend the first time was in 7th grade. To say that first time lasted 30 seconds was certainly to be rounding up. By 8th grade, I was up to a few minutes - not much more. I expect the "fantasy" tales told of young men and older women are mostly written by young men because it can not be that much fun for the mature women.

So......I get your drift. You are right on. But, yes, I was THAT young. I have kids now - hard to imagine such a thing at my mature age.

When we hitch hiked everywhere! Hitched to little league football practice at Our Lady of Mercy every day. Hitched to Penn State when I wanted to visit colleges. Hitched from there to U of M, Ann Arbor. Lots of adventures!

Anyone remember Diver Dan? "He protects and he saves his friends under the sea, that's why we love Diver Dan."
