How is Sorority Rush going?

For parents wondering what due would be for UVA sororities, I cut and pasted the least and most expensive fees/dues that I noticed in their ISC 2025 PNM Handbook. There's a pretty wide range -
New Member Fees: $826.00 Out of House Dues: $650.00/Fall; $492.00/Spring
New Member Fees: $3153.00 Out of House Dues: $2903.00/Fall; $2655.00/Spring

The only kids that truly benefit from Sororities are the ones that had to attend a public university….I guess for DCummers that is the only way they can show up at their social circle and avoid the discussion of Jenny’s inability to get accepted at a very competitive school….at least Jenny is at X sorority….

I couldn’t care less that sorority my DD is in it ether it not wanted to be in one. Its not always about status people. My DD is in a sorority with a lot of girls who she loves and is living with 8 of them as a senior. It’s been a great experience that that’s all that matters. Great memories, friends and a leadership role. All completely worth the $850/semester.

Anyone willing to talk about the negatives of sororities?

Daughter got a bid to her first choice. It is not one of the "Big 3" and it is a perfect place for her. Quote from her, "I had so much fun rushing." I was worried because of some things I read here, but it can be a very positive experience. She's already super-involved in a few activities and I'm sure she will find ways to get very involved in her sorority. I hope others at UVA also had positive experiences, as the OP stated
+1 to all of this. DD shared a few celebration videos on our family groupchat and is very excited (despite the weather). Congratulations to all the girls and best wishes to those starting rush now.

Regarding the information just shared about uva sorority dues: wow! I had no idea about the high end possible expense. I have a daughter starting college next Fall (upenn,). She says she wants to rush. - I will let her know she better earn a lot this summer to pay for that!

It’s pretty time consuming, it’s expensive, and most girls outgrow it before they graduate, but they have to continue to participate or else they’re fined (like for rush week). There can be pressure to drink and dress and behave in certain ways instead of being yourself.

As someone who has very little knowledge of greek life, what do the fees pay for? Especially, if DD is not living in the sorority house.

Thanks!

As someone who is unfamiliar with all this, I hope it continues to be a positive experience.

They pay for social events, rush and house upkeep I believe. It also usually includes some meals.

I was the one who posted about the published fees/dues at UVA but I would imagine it could be quite different at U Penn, maybe they also have some sort of handbook online. I did see that 5 meals/week were included in out-of-house dues for some of the more expensive ones (and fewer or no meals for some of the less expensive ones).

It is not time consuming. Most houses do not even pledge anymore they are now new sisters. Usually chapter is 1x a week and you can go or not go to parties. Rush is mandatory and you do get fined if you do not go but that is understandable. If you are not interested in your sorority by senior year you can deactivate but most do not because they like the sorority fun. There are also formals/date parties/brunches/parents events l

So are the New Member Fees due today, on Bid day? I assume they have to pay the New Member Fee and the Spring Dues ASAP?
