Pun intended.
I saw another thread a few days ago referencing a Penn & Teller video about how organic food is just a lot of BS, basically because the pesticides farmers use now are "so advanced" that they're not even a health threat anymore (if I remember correctly). My thoughts were, Who the hell are Penn & Teller to be authorities on ANY subject at all? and, Is that true? Please correct me if I've mixed anything up. I have a 1-year-old, and I just don't know what to believe. I'm very skeptical about this kind of crap, and I try to eat healthy. I've been buying organic for the baby, but we don't have a lot of $$, so I'd appreciate knowing if I'm blowing it on some marketing BS. What do you think? |

Less chemicals is always good, but I am not willing to pay 2x as much for it. If organic was the same price, then yes, but that is never the case
So, we buy "regular" fruit, veg, meat, etc. Besides, it's not like we live in a 3rd world country and farmers are spraying DDT everywhere so I feel like the food is safe. Plus, it always seems like it's the organic food thst always gets recalled. Probably bc the fertilizer is shit, literally. Makes you wonder which is worse...? |

Glyphosate will kill you as fast as the pesticides. Glyphosate is what you are consuming when you eat genetically modified produce, which is non-organic.
Do some research on glyphosate. It's not controversial...it's baaaaaaad shit. it's just not told to you if you aren't doing the research. |
| Have you heard of washing vegetables? |
I'm op, and I don't know if you're talking to me, but do you honestly think you can rinse away chemicals applied to plants? Nothing absorbs? Seriously?! |
|
Something that concerns me about conventionally grown produce is the like of micronutrients in the foods. I think micronutrients will turn out to be far more important to our bodies and health, than we currently realize.
When foods are grown using commercial, artificial fertilizer, they will not have nearly as many of the other nutrients needed to grow. |
The answer is no, you can't. They make them to stick to the plants in rain. |
A lot of foods are irradiated now, which basically kills everything in it. It's pretty much useless. |
I would think the pesticides could be absorbed into the plant as it is growing. |

. Rather than address these, Big Organic’s marketing seems to push the image of Monsanto as some sort of Evil Empire that they’re nobly taking on. It is very important to point out that just like the companies that sell genetically modified products, the organic industry is also for profit, and they’re both competing for market share. The current crusade to force companies to label products made from GMOs? It seems to be part of a strategy to tip the scales further in the favor of Big Organic. - See more at: http://www.forwardprogressives.com/neil-degrasse-tyson-vs-big-organics-crusade-gmos-explained/#sthash.qcaV6Vd2.dpuf

Space doctor no equal food expert. |
Glyphosate is Roundup which is a pesticide. It is heavily used to kill weeds in residential areas and it is also used on GMOs that are Roundup resistant. These are usually grains and not vegetable/fruit crops. Roundup is in the water system due to the large use in residential areas (don't want those weeks messing up our expensive neighborhoods) and due to farming so I would be more worried about your water than the GMOs. "The EPA considers glyphosate to be noncarcinogenic and relatively low in dermal and oral acute toxicity. The EPA considered a "worst case" dietary risk model of an individual eating a lifetime of food derived entirely from glyphosate-sprayed fields with residues at their maximum levels. This model indicated that no adverse health effects would be expected under such conditions." Just because you are eating a GMO does not mean you are eating a pesticide. Many GMOs do not have the Roundup Ready gene cloned into them. Some GMOs like tomatoes may have a gene that allows them to stay ripe longer without rotting thus reducing waste. I also hate to burst your little organic is better bubble but "What makes organic farming different, then? It’s not the use of pesticides, it’s the origin of the pesticides used. Organic pesticides are those that are derived from natural sources and processed lightly if at all before use. This is different than the current pesticides used by conventional agriculture, which are generally synthetic." Organic is definitely not what everyone thinks it is. I wouldn't waste the money, instead wash your fruits and veggies well and don't stress about it. The stress will kill you before any pesticide used in farming will. |

Evidence about organic being healthier to consume is controversial.
HOWEVER, it is not at all controversial that the petroleum based fertilizers and insecticides used in non-organic farming are bad for the environment and the farm workers (often times poor migrant workers) who are exposed to those chemicals in large amounts on a daily basis. |
