Copying rental DVDs ?

Anonymous
We rent DVDs for our kids from the library (which is free), since we are on a limited budget & really can't afford to rent or buy them. Do you think it's OK to make copies of those DVDs that we rent ? Not trading or selling them, just making copies so 1) we don't spend any money and 2) the kids will always have the DVDs available to watch. I'm curious on everyone's opinions. Thanks.

No.

no, but i'd consider doing it anyway.

either way you're not paying, and it frees the movie up for someone else to watch.

No this is illegal. if you want a copy of it buy it. This is the kind of thing that drives up the cost of DVDs

No. That is theft and is illegal.

it is piracy. but lots of people don't care about piracy laws.

No.

Actually, I think there is a "stop" function on some DVDs (especially for public-use ones like at the library, Red Box, etc.) for people like you. Even if you attempt to copy, your burner won't be able to because of the "stop" coding.

there are ways around the stop function. There's a box you can buy. Best Buy used to sell them, in fact.

The price of CD's and DVD's went up LONG before things like napster and such. Prices are going up because of people's greed.

OK in what sense? It is copyright infringement. If you have a strong moral compass, then it is not OK.

But certainly it can't be compared with, for instance, the crimes of a Mao or a Pol Pot.

I have thought a lot about this topic for some reason (don't ask me why, perhaps I'm just strange --but then I also had a long discussion with a friend about whether it is okay to leave a one-price-buffet-type restaurant while still eating a muffin, or whether it is technically stealing/hoarding if one doesn't consume all the food while still physically in the restaurant, LOL). Anyway, here is my own personal moral decision: I agree that copying is piracy and wrong, and does not fairly reward the artists, etc., and deprives people/industries of their rightful earnings. So, I have decided that I won't copy things that I or others would otherwise pay for. I have decided, however, that I am comfortable copying things that I would truly never otherwise pay for (and I mean really, not just rationalizing to make me feel better, LOL). So for example, I wouldn't copy a DVD that I would otherwise buy (one that I plan to watch a lot, for example), but I would copy a DVD (assuming it is even possible because I haven't tried it) from the library that I wouldn't pay for otherwise (one, say, that I am in the middle of watching and won't watch again, just to save me from having to renew it).
