Yup, playing up is possible and playing down isn't. If you currently club says no to playing up, you can find another team. But this would make 8/1 work better, not 9/1. Under 8/1, August kids are oldest and those not aligned with their grade can play up a year.

Set to 8/1. It will cause a reverse trap for August kids who went to school on time and were not trapped by the current BY. It will also add one month's players to switch teams.

Set to 9/1 will avoid the reverse trap and reduce the number of players switching.

There is no perfect solution, but 9/1 will have less impact.

Looking at the state birth dates to start school, 8-1 works for basically everyone and 9-1 doesn't. I see why it used to be 8-1 and why they are looking to revert back. August kids can always play up to match grade. Don't know why this is in dispute.

This is it. I don’t know why anyone would keep suggesting 9/1

Playing up is not as easy as you all think for many clubs. My DD is at a club where basically no kids are playing up. ECNL does not incentivize playing up — college recruiting doesn’t incentivize playing up. Some clubs won’t let you kid play up (other than a one off guest play here and there) no matter how good your kid is.

Set to 9/1. ECNL issues waiver to Aug. player to play down to their grade during the showcase.

Because, as many have said, ‘playing up’ for August kids whose school year has a 9/1 cut off is not always a choice provided by clubs.

It’s all about $$. When someone plays up, they are kicking an age appropriate kid off the team or possibly decreasing playing time for others in the team.

9/1 removes the possibility of angry August parents and players.

8/1 or 9/1 will determine whether August kids play up or play down to stay with their grade. If set to 8/1, more Aug. kids will play up than play down if set to 9/1. Player up is harder than play down. Setting to 9/1 also reduces 20% player movement during transition.

So 9/1 is most logical choice and Aug. kids will get waiver to play down in their grade for showcase.

ECNL on podcast said they are against waivers, against exceptions so August kids can find a team to play up if desired. It may not be the top team but it will be a team that aligns with their grade.

9-1 won't work for many states, 8-1 worked before, waivers are a slippery slope, kids cannot play down, kids cannot play down and finally kids cannot play down (except MLS Next's giant loophole).

If I was in your situation, (I don't know maybe having a Sept kid, wanting them to be the oldest and hating on August kids), I would realize the arguments for 9-1 are bunk.

Side note, I don't care 8-1 or 9-1, time to vote.

Since it is going to be 8/1 most likely as before, August kids just play within their age bracket. Maybe they will give a waiver for July kids to play down.
