Again, there are shades of gray here. A full on PR-arranged marriage is probably pretty rare (but does happen). And some celebs do just meet and fall in love. But a not-insignificant number of these relationships start out as "well if these two hit it off it would do wonders for her film premiere in May" or "this is a good match because she softens his image after the bad press last year."

Also, if you started dating someone and as a result of being associated with them, suddenly you were making a bunch more money (as Kelce has from his jersey sales, which he gets a cut of and have gone through the roof since he started dating Travis), it might make you look at that person in a rosier light, right? When you can't separate those things, which you can't with these two, it's impossible to say the relationship has no PR element.

Which, by the way, is why Joe Alwyn's preference to keep his relationship with Taylor as private as possible, and in particular keeping it private as it relates to their careers, makes a lot of sense to me in terms of having a healthy relationship with someone as famous as Travis. Yes he has songwriting credits on her albums because obviously they enjoyed collaborating together creatively, but he used a pseudonym and never made any public appearances related to that. He preferred to attend his own premiers solo so that they could be about the work and his artistry and not about Taylor. Some Swifties view that as selfish or unfair to her and I don't get it. He wanted to keep their relationship about the two of them, and not about their careers and any "synergy" they might have. That's romantic, and smart, IMO.

I think Taylor and Travis are walking a dangerous line because he's launching a Hollywood career in the midst of all this, and it's opening doors for him and benefiting him financially a lot. That kind of power imbalance is volatile, in my opinion. It seems great now, when they are both on top of the world. In 2 years he's going to be a retired NFL player trying to launch an acting career/a clothing line/whatever. As his world gets closer to hers and their careers intersect more, how does that impact the NORMAL challenges any couple faces over the course of a relationship, especially in your 30s and 40s as you deal with serious things like deciding once and for all if you will have kids, aging parents, the realities of aging yourself.

I just cannot imagine a relationship with this much money involved, under this much scrutiny, ever lasting. Name ONE celeb couple like this that has endured. There isn't one.

Alwyn had it right. If you want a real relationship and you are as famous and exposed as Swift is, you have to draw a line around it and keep the press and the publicists and fans OUT. Taylor either doesn't get this or she doesn't really care.

Remember when Gisele and Tom Brady got together. They were separately huge and as much an equal power couple as we typically see. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were separately huge and a power couple in the same industry. Kim and Kanye were huge separately and together. Victoria Beckham wasn't nearly as huge as David was separately, but together they're still a power couple. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are famous alone and together, but we all saw how their relationship couldn't weather the constant scrutiny, which they played into constantly! The only ones still together are the Beckhams and Bennifer 2.0, and those have been publicly rocky over the years.

These are all celebrities and/or athletes. I'm not counting couples where someone is successful in an industry with less media coverage like business or politics.

I see Taylor and Travis coming into this most similarly to Gisele and Tom. The difference is that Gisele made a decision to step back for years to be a hands on mother, which put the relationship and career issues on the back burner for years. I really doubt Taylor would do that. So when Tom finally retired and Gisele was ready to return to the career she loved ... they accepted that they no longer worked as a couple. Taylor and Travis are going to hit that point a lot sooner.

Taylor is way bigger than Travis. Taylor swift is a household name and a global name.

Tom was bigger than Gisele. Gisele was big, to be sure, but Tom was not only a legendary QB but also very good looking. Like you said, she took a step back to let his star eclipse hers. And ultimately she seemed to resent that when he didn’t give her a chance to do the same.

I don’t see either of these two giving up their careers in the short term. They also dont strike me as particularly compatible in general. Travis Kelce is not glamorous, east coast, elitist Tom Brady. He is essentially a lumberjack and Taylor is enjoying not feeling like the alpha for once, or at least being with someone who feels less like a beta with her compared to past boyfriends. I don’t see either of them being into it long term, but could be wrong.

Disagree that Tom was bigger than Gisele. If anything it was reversed she was huge as a supermodel and having dated Leonardo DiCaprio and she pretty much had a higher net worth than Tom there whole time together. But Tom and Gisele were definitely closer in terms of fame and wealth than Taylor and Travis.

I agree with this. Brady is such a household name now that people don't really remember, but it was actually somewhat similar to Taylor and Travis, in that he was obviously extremely well known among football fans, even casual ones, but did not have the kind of star power of Gisele, who was a household name, headlined the Victorias Secret fashion show, had tons of very high end contracts with elite brands, etc. Brady was a QB, and had won Super Bowls, but was still pretty young.

The closest equivalent today would be if someone like Gigi Hadid or Kendall Jenner started dating Joe Burrow. He doesn't have any SB rings and they aren't quite as singularly famous as Gisele was back then (in some ways they are more famous because of social media, but also so is everyone else so the field is more crowded). In this imagined scenario, Gigi or Kendall would absolutely be raising Joe Burrow's profile and not the other way around.

The thing about super models is that they tend to split their fans pretty equally between men and women. Whereas pro athletes tend to have large male fan bases but comparatively fewer women (that's changing but it has not equalized). A very beautiful, sexy, young model winds up appealing to a broader fan base because they are aspirational for women, desirable to heterosexual men, and offer glamour and fashion for a certain segment of the gay male population. Athletes do not have such a broad appeal.

I was looking for this response. And also Alex Ovechkin in the fountain in Georgetown and elsewhere. It happens.

Any of the interviews with Gronk and Edelman talking about their parades too - they talk about being blackout on dozens of beers and shots of fireball from the Bostonians. This thread is classic DC nerds witnessing sports culture for the first time.

lol. agree. classic over-educated liberal self-centered nerds.

This might by why they're turning Brittany Mahomes who is a soccer player (athlete) into a Sports Illustrated Supermodel, literally instantly.

Yes this type of behavior does happen, but I can think of many classy football players who have won and would never act like that. Big NY Giants fan. Saw them win 4 Super Bowls and have seen 4 victory parades. Never saw an embarassment like this with them. I wonder what Taylor’s reaction to this will be. Mortified? Shrug it off? Or should I say shake it off?

Eli had rules about pictures of him after this one.

But he had beers in the bus after EVERY.Game,

Why is no one talking about the red flag parade that is Travis's anger? Like are we supposed to excuse his absurd, macho man aggression because it's "normal" in sports? Run, Taylor, your man is a basic bro.

Who here thinks they're gonna get hitched?

This is the same man who told President Biden last year to "just stay over there" while he proceeded to walk up to the presidential podium to address the crowd at the White House until Mahomes pushed him out of the way and apologized.

The confidence is unmatched.

If the PR gets bad enough she will dump him quickly.

What’s funny about it? He’s just a loud, poorly dressed, oaf. Notice how all of the players dressed nicely for the occasion but he had to wear a bright red suit and tennis shoes. He’s an insecure attention whore.

He has a history of anger management issues. Also, drug issues too.

But, they are a cute couple.
