My daughter is 16 and now is getting bad acne on her cheeks. I'm not sure whether to take her to the dermatologist since it is expensive. Any suggestions are gladly appreciated. |
Has she tried proactive? I got a sudden bout of hormon acne in my mid twenties and it cleared it up. |
If it's bad and stubborn . Accutane ASAP .i speak from experience . Don't waste time. |
Birth control pills |
find a dermatologist who is covered by insurance--you will have a co-pay. you can request generic drugs and samples. accutane is very, very harsh. There may be other options that you should explore first, but do go; it can be important to a teens self esteem. |
Accutane gets rid of it forever before the scarring starts. |
Just go to a dermatologist and they'll be all gone in a few months. If you have bad insurance or no insurance, I think a consult is $200 (you can ask for pricing). I went at 14, and went back at 37. I would schedule asap - scarring is permanent. |
Same PP again. Call my derm - Dr Damm. he is in Laurel MD (i drive all the way from NoVA). Good luck. |

I preach all the time on this site about this, and will do so again. Most acne, if not all, is hormonal. I recommend taking her to an ob, who deals with female hormone. Most dermatologist deal with the skins surface and not the true cause of acne, so no matter how much crap you put on your face, it won't help. Accutane is very powerful and wouldn't be my first go to. |
If $$$ is a problem, you could just ask her primary care physician to prescribe a 2 1/2 mo course of slow-release Doryx. It kills the underlying infection (acne is an infection). It might get a little worse at first and come out and then it clears.
You could also buy a 5% benoxyl peroxide gel for nighttime (whole face). The pharmacist can order some available without a prescription. |
Am the other preacher on this site about this. Based on experience with my DD--three Accutane failures--I would definitely do a hormonal check before doing Accutane. Her problem was definitely hormonal and birth control plus Spironalactone have done what Accutane could not and have cleared up her acne. |
I would schedule an appointment with a dermatologist (check which ones are covered by your plan). In the meantime, have her wash her face twice a day with Cetaphil and use Neutrogena on the spot acne treatment. |
I would definitely not do accurate first. Google it. It's serious business. I took it, and didn't have very serious acne. If someone had just sat me down and showed me a good wash that wasn't too drying to my skin--that would have done the job. That was just for me, but try the obgyn, and also try a good cosmetician and/or beautician to try and figure out her skin type. The skin has two layers...if she's drying out the top layer with harsh soaps and the underlayer is oily---this is a formula for zips. Try a mild soap (normal dove), only moisturize under her eyes where she'll get wrinkles later (no moisturizer on the rest of the face!) and spot treat zits with clearasil. If she's using sunscreen, this will exacerbate the problem, I'm afraid. Accurate is good for non-treatable cystic acne, which does scar very badly. Hope some of this is helpful. |
Pp again. Cetaphil contains lots of moisturizers, and caused me to get loads of acne. Once I switched, my face was much better. You want to remove the oil from the skin, but not dry it so you don't need a moisturizer. Sorry if I've contributed too much! I just wish someone had taken more time with me when I was younger... ![]() |
