I am trying to find time to work out but find it impossible. I have a job that is from 8;30 to 5:30 or 6, I rush home to see the baby for 30 min or so before she goes to sleep, eat dinner, sometimes do more work and then go to bed. I like exercising in the morning but lately my baby has been waking up as early as 6am. If I am up, I would love to workout but feel guilty leaving her to go work out when I don't see her all day and see her 20 min at night. Occasionally she does sleep in until 7 so I know I could fit in a workout before she gets up but it is unpredictable and I hate being away from her - it isn't really guilt but I am obsessed with trying to spend every waking moment with her. I workout on the weekends but that isn't enough. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I used to workout 5-6 times a week! |
jogging stroller? or just throw her in a regular stroller and try to hit some hills.
i commute on foot with a dd in a stroller and i try to look for ways to make this my exercise. we do it even in the cold and rain because, well, i have to get to work! get a stroller snugly and rain cover and take her out! can you walk at lunch? i do that too, even though i feel like a dork |
I used to work out in the morning, but now with DD, it just doesn't work for me anymore - I'd have to get up at 5am. So I work out on the evenings that my husband is doing the bath/bed routine. It's only about 30-40 mins, but I figure it's better than nothing. I'm right there with you on the not much time with DD during the week and feeling guilty about doing anything else when she is awake on the weekdays. |
Can you get a video/DVD and do that kind of workout instead? That way you can prop baby in the swing, bouncy seat, or whatever and baby can watch you and you can still be with baby.

If the baby is under 12 months, it is not recommended to go running with them in a jogging stroller (see multiple past threads on this topic). Most jogging stroller manufacturers also put a disclaimer in their manuels advising against this too. |
I know this is not feasible for everyone, but the only way I get regular workouts is by working out at lunchtime. I have the benefit of having a cheap gym in my office building, but some people use nearby gyms or go out for walks before they eat their lunch at their desks. I also try to squeeze in a weekend workout, although lately I've been failing at that. Before I joined the office gym, I would go for 30-minute walks or 30 minutes on my home elliptical after I put the baby to sleep and before I sat down for dinner. That got harder to do as DC got older, stayed up later, resisted bedtime more forcefully, etc. Good luck finding an option that works for you! |
I have a somewhat similar schedule to yours, 8:30-4:30 or so, plus commuting time. I've taken to getting up at 4:45 to get to the gym at 5. I'm home by 6:30 at the latest. My DD is up by then but my DH is spending his quality time with her (he doesn't usually get to see her in the evening) so I don't feel so bad. Everything is about balance. Maybe you could try to work out two days during the week so the other three you are with your DD. |
What does DD and DH mean? |
I have to do it at lunch too - try to do it 2x a week. My office has a little gym which is nice for quick workouts, or I take a walk, or if I have more time I walk up to my gym and take a lunchtime yoga class or squeeze in a workout. It has saved me since I used to be an early morning work out girl before having a baby. I actually find it is easier to work out on workdays then on weekends and my one day off during the week from work. I get less done when I have the whole day to do it! the only thing I can do on those days is take the baby on a stroller walk, and lately it's been so cold that's been hard.
I know in this town (at least in my office environment) people like to give the impression they are soooo busy and can't take lunch but I try to take an hour every day - even though I only work four days a week. And I feel I am more efficient that way (I have to be there all day so skipping lunch doesn't let me leave earlier). I know not everyone has that option but if you can take some time during your work day for your self, it totally makes being a working mom easier and lets the few hours in the morning and evening be totally about the baby. |
I also work out during my work day. I take a half hour fast walk around the block while listening to podcasts on my ipod. I go every day unless it's raining. It's the only way I can fit in the exercise, in the evenings I'm way too tired to fit it in. Plus it makes the day at work go faster ![]() |
Ditto the work-day workout. I am lucky enough to work somewhere that has an exercise room in the basement. I go there during lunch, which I usually eat at my desk. Also, bike commuting is the only other way I get exercise. This is A LOT easier now that my child is older, BTW. As your child grows this will get easier, I promise. |
I tried to do the early morning thing...not happening! I need my sleep. I work out on my lunch hour. I have the most energy then, and it revs me up for the rest of the day. I am even thinking of giving up my night classes and making them all lunch time.
However, before I became an instructor and my kids were very young, I just did video workouts at home everynight. That helped me shed my first 20 pounds. |
DH/DD/DS = Dear/Darling Husband/Daughter/Son
Before I had the kid, I used to work out religiously every morning before work. Now I don't have child-care in the morning for workouts, so I've had to adapt. I commute about 2 hours a day and work 8 hours/day. My average workout week: Mon- I leave DD with the nice daycare lady at the gym and work out for an hour after work Tue- I sneak down to my office gym at lunch and run for 45 minutes Wed- DD's dad comes over and watches her while I hit the gym Thu- sneak away at lunch to run again Fri- get up a little early, drop DD off as early as possible at Daycare and hit the gym or the treadmill before work (if this doesn't happen, I usually just skip the friday workout.) Sat- Take DD to the gym with me and work out for an hour Sun- Leave DD with her father and take a yoga class and then work out for a couple hours. I also have a treadmill at home for the days when snow or illness keeps us home - I'll run on it while she's napping. Or if it's a telecommuting day for me, I'll drop her off at daycare, hit the gym, then go home and work. It's all about being flexible and really organized. i.e. gym bag is ALWAYS packed the night before with workout stuff and shower stuff, and I have all but abandoned any sort of beauty routine during the week. Down side of all this: gym time is about the only time I have to myself. Upside: I've lost all but 7 lbs of baby weight by 3 months post-partum. (i gained 50+ lbs.) good luck! |
One of my fondest memories of my childhood was doing Jane Fonda workout videos with my mom. I must have been 4-6, and I would put on my leotard and do the exercises with her.
I know it doesnt work as well with a baby - although you could work out in the house after baby is sleeping. I hold my baby use her as a weight for squats, chest presses and abs, etc.. |
Actually, I know lots of ladies who put young infants (4 mos. and up) in joggers. They have expensive joggers that don't jostle the baby a lot (there is a difference; not all joggers are the same) and they have a head cusion attachment thing in them. Just sayin' that you may want to look at this a little.
My workouts are evenings and weekends only. Not a morning person. That's the only way it gets done. |
