| I bought a 5lb bag of garlic at Costco - I couldn't resist. But now I'm trying to figure out how to store it to make it last. I use like a head of garlic a week. I've got 5 pounds! HELP! |
| Do you have a basement or cellar? I think it's just critical to keep the garlic out of heat/sunshine, so definitely not in the kitchen. |
| No problem- freeze it! |
| Well, you can peel and freeze them, but they will lose their flavor more in the freezer. OP - you are crazy. I'm Korean and use a lot of garlic in cooking, but most Koreans I know wouldn't buy a 5lb bag of garlic unless they were making enough kimchee for the year like the olden days, and even then 5lbs of garlic is probably too much, and there is a lot of garlic in kimchee. |
| 5 lbs???? Are you sure it's not 2? I have a 2lb bag from costco too. Just keep it on the counter and go through it within a month or so. |

Make a wreath?
http://www.thegreenhead.com/2007/05/garlic-wreath.php OP, you will definitely not have to worry about vampires. |
| Roast a bunch of heads at once, then peel and freeze them whole in olive oil or puréed. |
| I always keep my garlic (and onions) in the fridge. Should I not do that? |
Unless they're cut or cooked, I'd stored them at room temp like potatoes. |
Ha... I was just thinking a 5lb bag of garlic is just what I need to keep Korean DH happy. If there's a limit to how much garlic he likes added to recipes, I haven't found it yet. He eats roasted cloves like they're candy. |
NP here. I'm Italian. I'm not sure about Koreans, but yeah, I can use 5 lbs of garlic in the course of normal cooking before it goes bad. I usually don't have to buy that much, but I grow it and I get about a 10-15 lb harvest every fall. Never had a problem with it going bad as long as I hang it and keep it dry. |
