High school trends

Anonymous
My DD is starting high school this year and I'm afraid we're "out of the loop". She's coming from a very small private school. Can you tell us what's "in?" Examples include: What brand of backpack? Do kids bring lunchbags at this age? If so, what brand? What brands of shoes? Clothes? Are the girls wearing any makeup? Is everyone still drinking starbucks?

I'm not suggesting we're going to go out and buy her every "it" thing, but I always don't want her to stand out for being out of touch. A few tips would go a long way. Thanks so much!

I think it depends on location and also crowd. Can you tell us what school she will be going to, or what area?

If she's into performing arts then what's in will be shunned by her crowd. They like to buck the trend. My high schooler never wants to be wearing what other kids are wearing. When we go to ny she goes into goodwill and second hand shops to buy there. She uses a bag she got in Greece - she met a girl from turkey in the airport and they traded bags on the spot. She very much doesn't want to look like everyone else. Last year on the first day of ninth grade she wore ballet flats, jeans, two chemises layered and a ton of pearls (think early Madonna).

This thread is a good argument in favor of school uniforms.

Just give her 100s of dollars

Ya know, there are people who shop a lot, and people who don't. True, every HS and every crowd will have their own way of fashion or anti-fashion. For those parents who really don't have a clue, it's OK to give some help. Like: even though GAP goes up to size 16, it doesn't mean GAP girls clothes are a good idea for HS. Or maybe they are. That kind of thing. There's going to be a Goodwill crowd ) and the American Eagle crowd and then the ones who won't touch AE with a 10 foot pole... How to quietly not stand out as a target till you figure out where you fall isn't easy for everyone. Help if you can

Meh. My kids have school uniforms and it's still pretty clear what the trends are - even though they wear a uniform they still see who's wearing the $200 Jcrew jacket, who's sipping starbucks as they walk in, who has the latest iPhone or who's got the nicest backpack.

And, if they have any integrity, they roll their eyes and take pride in not needing to look rich to be popular.

OP, does your DD care about this, or just you?

This may come as a shock, but most high schoolers care about this sort of stuff. Weren't you ever young?

I'm sure I'll get slammed by someone for offering any suggestions, but here it goes. OP, my DD in 10th grade wears mainly shorts, jeans and leggings with various shirts layered over them. She wears a little makeup (mascara, eyeliner, sometimes BB cream), and it seems like many of her friends do as well. She uses a Jansport backpack, but I've seen a range -- from LLBean to messenger bags. Whether kids use lunchboxes may depend on the school. My daughter attends a high school with an open lunch, meaning that the majority of kids go off grounds at lunch to nearby shops and fast food places. YMMV. Some of the popular shoes i see are Converse sneakers, boots of all sorts, sandals when the weather is warm, Sperrys, Toms, Uggs when the weather is cold. The great thing about a large high school is the variety of things you will see kids wearing. I think your DD should find a couple of outfits she feels good in for the first few days, and I'm sure she'lll rapidly figure out what the kids she's hanging out with tend to wear. In the meantime she probably can't go wrong with a pair of denim shorts from someplace like American Eagle, a t shirt, and a pair of sandals, sneakers or sperrys.

Your attention to detail, 17:55, is very creepy.

Ignore the haters, PP. This is a very helpful post. First day of high school is tough.

NP - actually I think it appropriately answer OP's question, and offers especially good advice about waiting to purchase most items until after school starts. My DD purchases most of her own clothes but I'm still familiar with what brands she wears. We shop together sometimes and I do her laundry. I don't think it's at all creepy that PP knows what teens are wearing - especially as the brands she lists are pretty basic/identifiable.

NP. I do not agree with what you are implying here. You have said that people who care about finding out what the typical/appropriate/preferred mode of dress is for a particular environment have no integrity. I think this is a ridiculous and hurtful statement to make about someone's children on the basis of such limited information -- I do not think one is evidence or proof of the other.

When moving to a new city, or interviewing for a job, or starting a new position, did you honestly never once ask a friend in the area/company what they "typical" dress was like? That's pretty much the adult equivalent of what this poster is attempting to do for her DD.

I don't think it's necessarily about trying to look "rich", I think it's about trying to look "appropriate", and I fail to see how that is a sign that the person conducting such fact-finding, or the person on whose behalf it is being conducted, lacks integrity.

Please enlighten me, and I do mean that sincerely, on why you think this. I have often encouraged and assisted my girls to learn about and at least consider what constitutes typical dress for their various social circles and activities, but if doing this is somehow harmful to their moral development or to the public perception of their moral development I would genuinely like to know why so I can consider changing my stance.
