And, if they have any integrity, they roll their eyes and take pride in not needing to look rich to be popular. OP, does your DD care about this, or just you?
This may come as a shock, but most high schoolers care about this sort of stuff. Weren't you ever young? I'm sure I'll get slammed by someone for offering any suggestions, but here it goes. OP, my DD in 10th grade wears mainly shorts, jeans and leggings with various shirts layered over them. She wears a little makeup (mascara, eyeliner, sometimes BB cream), and it seems like many of her friends do as well. She uses a Jansport backpack, but I've seen a range -- from LLBean to messenger bags. Whether kids use lunchboxes may depend on the school. My daughter attends a high school with an open lunch, meaning that the majority of kids go off grounds at lunch to nearby shops and fast food places. YMMV. Some of the popular shoes i see are Converse sneakers, boots of all sorts, sandals when the weather is warm, Sperrys, Toms, Uggs when the weather is cold. The great thing about a large high school is the variety of things you will see kids wearing. I think your DD should find a couple of outfits she feels good in for the first few days, and I'm sure she'lll rapidly figure out what the kids she's hanging out with tend to wear. In the meantime she probably can't go wrong with a pair of denim shorts from someplace like American Eagle, a t shirt, and a pair of sandals, sneakers or sperrys.
Ignore the haters, PP. This is a very helpful post. First day of high school is tough.
