Yorktown attendance island?

Why is there a Yorktown attendance island set apart from the rest of the APS district?

Diversity -- that's how APS tries to make Yorktown and Williamsburg less "white". There may have been a lawsuit or state involvement as well.

I don't know, but that island should be up for debate when things are redistricted. It makes little sense looking at a map.

One theory - completely unfounded - is that they did it to fold in some generals' kids from Ft Myer.

The diversity argument is a decent one, except that most of the people living in the high-priced apartments in Rosslyn/Courthouse are white too.

There's also a pocket of South Arlington homes that feed into Washington-Lee, despite being closer to Wakefield. I think that's a diversity play.

Agreed. It probably will depend partly on where the additional high school goes and whether it's a choice program.

Well--- the families in the 2million+ homes in my neighborhood do send their kids to public. My daughter's best friend (from our elem) lives in those elevator townhomes in Rosslyn. It is one of the best pyramids 'Science Focus-WMS-Yorktown'.

+1. There are certainly some kids from those townhouses (I know a family there at ASFS), but there are also tons of garden apartments right behind them. I used to live in one a long time ago!

There aren't many $2 million properties in Arlington to begin with, so an anecdote doesn 't make the generalization wrong.

Not all. Some of Key/ASF goes to YHS, some to W-L. Some goes to Swanson Middle (Lyon village), some goes to TJ middle (houses behind Barnes and Noble). It is not a straight pyramid it depends on your exact address. Some of LV is Taylor elem. boundaries all over that area are crazy. You need to carefully look at the home you are buying---can't stress that enough.

Not true anymore. 3 sold for that amount 1 street from me in the last 2 months. Arlington is up 12% again. Average home price for ALL of Arlington (including South Arlington and far reaches) is now $1.05 million average. ALL of the County!
