whats my commute going to be like

Anonymous
I am offered a job in Sterling, VA, I live in Rockville. I will be using 495 but not 270. What is my afternoon commute going to be like? I will be leaving around 4-4:30.

Will be an opposite commute up until you hit 495. Then it will be hard to get to MD/home.

Why don't you look at google traffic around that time or try the trip a couple of times...?

Use white's ferry, it would take around 1 hour - 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on where in Rockville.

i tried that commute once a couple of weeks ago. I got off River road exit because it was really really bad. took me 1 hr 40 minutes to get home. I am just wondering if this was an exception or a rule.

I used to commute Sterling to Falls Church (are you at Orbital?). The beltway heading to Bethesda was the Apocalypse.

I think I would try White's Ferry. Maybe even point of rocks depending on where you are in rockville, but that would be extreme. But at least commute would probably be consistent.

Pretty normal.

495 is an absolute parking lot. CRAZY!

I commuted Reston to Tysons Corner and it was 45 minutes. I'd assume another hour if you needed to use 495 to go to Rockville. I didn't take the toll road though.

MD 28 to 15 would be longer but it'd (usually) be more consistent. OTOH, Friday afternoons, you're !@#$ed either way. It can take 20 minutes just to get out of Leesburg! If you could work it so you left at 3-3:30pm it'd work a lot better IMO

No way I'd do that commute. No. Bleeping. Way.

I do Reston to Potomac (River Road exit) - it sucks. A good, surprising day is 45 minutes, and those don't happen to often. Even paying for the hot lanes it's an hour, and I'm 15 minutes closer than you would be in Sterling.

I've been doing it for about 7 months and I've already started looking for jobs in Maryland.

I would take 270 to Frederick and pass into VA right after Point of Rocks. You'll come up to Rt 7 right into Sterling and Rt 28. We are in Loudoun and my husband goes to Rockville for work frequently.

You and me both.

Try Waze. It is an app that helps you figure out the quickest route with somewhat accurate estimates on time.

No - it's either off at River Road or down thru tysons and then up the inner loop and over the American Legion Bridge and then up I-270. Either way you should expect a bad commute. Wish I could be more encouraging.
