What in the original post let you know whether the OP is a man or woman?

How on earth will you pay the bills as a single parent if you're a barista?

only for a year. or maybe til Christmas. I can pay the minimum amount, eat rice and beans. Give up gym membership, cable, etc. Resign next month and take a break til the holiday. Resume work in Jan or in the summer.

Nice idea but what if January rolls around and you can't find a full time job. Are you prepared to make the lifestyle cut indefinitely? Also, you talk about the sacrifices you'll make (gym membership, etc) but how will your child be impacted by this decision.

FWIW, I'm with you - it's a fantastic dream. I just couldn't do it in real life - too many financial responsibilities

You think a job as a barista isn't stressful? Get a clue.

BTW, be nice to them otherwise they'll give you decaf. And you'll wonder why you have that headache later.

If you live minimally, why not? if your skills are in demand, you could consult on the side.

As someone who waited tables after the kids were born and did not want to return to work full time, but wanted some income, the restaurant industry was much less stressful than my professional job. Sure there were assholes, but who cares? They were in and out. It is nothing compared to the pressure I have. I could literally bankrupt my company with one enormous mistake.

yes, plan to live minimally and yes consult on the side or do something part time. i figure as long as i can bring in 30,000 i or so i can manage. mortgage is only $1200 and credit card bills i can pay the minimum. i can use HELOC and credit cards for food if things get tight. it's not ideal but I NEED A BREAK!

I guess I'm wondering what will happen and how you will pay the HELOC and credit card bills if you fail to resecure a FT job. Unless you are in something so in demand that is not a problem I'd think long and hard about this. Instead, I'd focus on how I could offload anything that was particularly stressful, ask for a little telecommute or other.

While it is possible, the odds of a man posting at DCUM that he wants to "quit a stressful job" to work PT is slim to fucking none. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Sounds like a horrible plan. I'd hate to be on the financial hook for you.
