Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I allow the PBS Kids standards, but there's a few I don't like. Won't let him watch Spnge Bob....for example... |
|
Thank you. I'm completely anti-Sponge Bob for little kids.
Mine is obsessed with Caillou right now. |
| agree. sponge bob is surprisingly scary and mean-spirited. my son watches some of the pbs shows if he's home sick or we're around in the morning. likes sesame street, sid the science kid. no other tv. he does watch dvds and videos (scholastic ones are particularly nice, really just reading the books aloud). |
| My DC watched a lot of Thomas videos when he was three. Also Bob the Builder is benign. |

Imagination Movers (on Disney), Little Bill
The Noggin channel is popular. |

I was anti-Sponge Bob for a while. I didn't let either of my kids watch it, but I was all alone on that front. I found that when they went to playmates' homes and in some cases, rode in their minivans (with DVDs which we don't have), they were obsessed with it. It was like the forbidden fruit. And then the mom would remember and say, "oh you're mom doesn't let you watch it and switch it off," making my kids (5 and 3), in effect, the spoilers of the fun!
I found it really wasn't worth the battle -- some things are of course -- and it was making it more of a thing than it needed to be. As long as you can avoid it, great. Now they'll watch it and the only undesirable (depending on your POV) thing they've picked up on is that Texas is bad (it's where Sandy the Squirrel and GW Bush are from according to my daughter). My husband is amused by it and he'll sit down and watch it. Now, Caillou... That kid! That whiny little kid! My kids love him though even the crazy books. I like the one where the mom has a "headache" and saunters off to take a nap leaving whinypants and his little sister to their own devices. Then Rosie draws on the walls. Who takes a nap when they are watching the kids?? |

funny I dont allow either spnge bob or Caillou. I cant stand the dang whiney its as bad if not worse then sponge bob and the meaness.
we watch sid the science kid, dragon tales, little einsteins, veggie tales, various noggin shows, noddy, anyhting educational but mainly I use dvds |
| Noddy, Little Bill, Thomas, Roary the racing car, The Simpsons, Family Guy, House of Payne and wheel of Fortune. |
| We pretty much watch Noggin during the morning and PBS kids in the evening. I also DVR our "favorite" shows like Backyardigans and Magic School Bus and we'll watch an episode of that instead of switching straight to whatever is on. |
| My son is 2.5... But his favorites are Caillou, Noddy, Sesame Street (usually just watch the Elmo's world part-- it's his favorite and only lasts about 15 minutes), Dora, and Diego. |
|
My son is actually not into TV at all. When he does watch, the only thing is Clifford the Big Red Dog (we have dogs so I think the talking dog is the attraction) and videos--Disney stuff like Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, Fox and Hound.

I don't let DS watch Caillou. I was warned by 3 other sets of parents not to let him watch it because all of them found that their kids like to imitate and whine like Caillou. Evil little kid.
He likes Jack's Big Music Show and Sid the Science Guy. I like Fireman Sam, but DS hasn't shown much interest in it.

Among the kids' shows, there aren't really any that I say he cannot watch; so when he's with his grandparents, for example, they watch whatever comes on PBS/Noggin/Disney while he's eating his snack when he gets home from school.
When I watch with him, I limit according to what I can tolerate, which means Sesame Street, WonderPets, Jack's Big Music Show, Mr. Rogers (big shout out to Mr. R -- AWESOME for kids this age, and so different than anything else on), Yo Gabba Gabba. I absolutely hate the Disney shows, and I've heard about that whiny Caillou so I avoid him. That Lazy Town show on Noggin is super-freaky, so I won't watch that, either. I find SpongeBob amusing, so if he wants to watch it, it's fine by me. Bob the Builder and all the other of that type (Roary, Fireman Sam) are also fine. Seriously, though, let me say it again: Mr. Rogers! He's such an antidote to all of the loud, over-animated, forcibly educational stuff out there. He's just gentle and kind, and my kid loves all the segments about how things are made. He also loves the neighborhood of make believe. And it takes me back to my own youth.... |
| his favorites are Power Rangers and Max and Ruby. We have never had a problem with Calliou-don't get why he annoys so many people. |

We also stick mainly with PBS and some of the Disney shows. My son loves Curious George and also likes Word World and Sid the Science Kid (although doesn't that kid look chubby?). I can't stand Dragon Tales because the theme song sticks in my head and I just don't get the whole show, but sometimes he watches that too.
I'll do Nick Jr. shows only through the on-demand feature of our cable, because otherwise there are too many commercials, and my 4-year old absorbs those now. Seriously, we were grocery shopping and he started telling me we needed to buy Honey Bunches of Oats because blah blah blah, or he'll hear a PSA on the college radio station I listen too and tell me I need to call that phone number (because, you know, I need money for community college). He does also watch Star Wars movies (just episodes I and IV) with my husband, but he knows that if something is inappropriate it's going off. He figured out what channel the cartoon network was and so I had to block it using parental controls because I fell asleep while he was watching something (I'm in my 3rd trimester) and woke up and he was watching something awful on that channel. |
