ECNL moving to school year not calendar

I hope ECNL

1. Apply strict SY on all age groups, either using 8/1 or 9/1

2. Allow a certain number of GY (due to hold back) to join the younger teams for the ECNL Showcase.

This will solve most trap players issues, reduce U18/U19 roster size and still maintain league game and playoff fairness.

If they change to 9/1, there will be a lot of questions on the rationale. 8/1 is already time-tested date and would be more difficult for skeptics to challenge.

How many seasons are trapped players actually trapped?
I thought it was only one

8th for half of a year and 12th for a year after their teammates leave for college.

They also are the wrong age for recruiting 10th vs 11th

What will happen to kids who are Q4 but weren't held back - meaning a Nov 2011 that is currently in 8th grade. Will they be forced to play down, meaning they would be in 9th grade when their team is in 8th grade and be forced to sit out freshman year high school soccer? I assume this would also negatively impact recruiting as well. The ideal scenario is they stay on their current BY 2011 squad playing up, I understand that, but if that is not an option this could get interesting. hypothetically if they were forced off the NL team, would they have the option to play down to stay on the younger NL team as one of the older players? Thanks

Play up if good enough or play at age.

A Nov 2011 in 8th grade started school a year early.

Our state just implemented a law that requires any kid after September has to wait to enter KG - prior it was up to the parents

Get ready for ECNL to implement Grad Year waivers. Fall 2026 when everyone is in compliance.

That will be a decision of the club and a conversation for parents to have. Also, it all depends on how good the player is. Both options have cons and pros.

Feeling the impact of RAE at the moment, but starting to turn the corner on all the growth issues. There would be a boost moving down for sure, but I think the ideal situation is to fight it out on the current squad and stay with the correct grad year. It's a tough one

I agree with that. But it is hard because since the player movement might happen across all ages, decisions will need to happen.

At ECNL/RL HS age, the player movement is significant. Every year, my son's ECNL team has about 30% to 40% new players. The RL team is even worse, with a turnover rate of 60% to 70%.

Grandfather HS age team to stay in BY is a joke. I do not think most Q3/Q4 players want to stay in the current BY team to sacrifice their recruiting opportunities. For the few Q3/Q4 who wish to stay in the current team, then work hard to pass the tryout

The teams for 6month intervals ideas is the dumbest idea I have seen. In no fairy tale land does that occur. The cost for additional refs alone would make it a non-starter, then add in the added burden for coaches or hiring more.
