I love retro-style clothing, and I see ads for ModCloth and think some of their stuff looks cute. Has anyone bought from them, and can you review the quality and the customer service? |
I bought a really cute raincoat several years ago. But I have been disappointed with the dresses--a lot of cheap polyester material, loose threads, and sloppy stitching.
I consider it in the same category, quality-wise, as Forever 21. Obviously with a different aesthetic. |
customer service is great. clothes hit or miss. read the reviews, love that some people post their own pictures, pay attention to measurements. Lots of items are high-waist and short, and I'm 5'2 saying that. |
This! Returns are very easy. I'm 5'0 and appreciate all the different shapes and sizes that post pictures of how they look in their outfits. Clothes are definitely hit or miss but I do love to browse their site even though I haven't kept anything I have purchased. |
+1. I love ModCloth and have some very high-quality pieces (and some lower-quality ones too), but I scrutinize the reviews before buying. Customer service is top-notch--I had a helpful chat with a rep online when I was thinking about buying my first post-baby two-piece bathing suit and was baffled by vintage sizing. She picked exactly the right size & style for me. I also love that you can see how the outfits look on real propke, not just models. |
Am a shill for Modcloth.
Bear in mind there is a range of prices and styles. Many dresses are very short, but there is also a nice selection of dresses in lengths perfectly appropriate for office wear. You might not get much quality from the $50 dresses, although I've ordered two things in that price range based on the reviews and have been happy with them. There are very nice all cotton dresses in the $80 to $100 range and there are dress selections in the $100 to $200, as well as over $200 range. Returns are easy and customer service is great. Most of the sizes are SML etc. A number of catalog operations use vanity sizing so if you are really a medium, you should order small. Not with Modcloth, although individual items may vary. Read the details--which are easy to pull down--and check for material content, whether there is a lining or pockets or not, and length. I'm just over 5'4" and 38 inch length is my minimum length for work attire. Check out the reviews--many post their measurements and the size they bought so you can have some idea if the fit they describe would apply to you. Some reviewers are also very picky about quality details, so you can avoid stuff that likely would not meet your standards. I put things I might like on my wishlist and then reassess a few days later. This keeps me from buying things that honestly I am just too old for. |
Over the last month or so, before they got rid of free returns, I bought/returned 6 dresses from ModCloth. Some just weren't my style (cap sleeves are so uncomfortable to me) and while I adored one, I looked like an idiot in it, because I am not an adorable 22yo, but a maternal 38yo. Love their clothes, have to admit I am too old for many of them. |
Another +1 ModCloth's customer service is spectacular but their clothing can be hit or miss. Read reviews before ordering and don't be bummed if some pieces just aren't what you were expecting because a lot of their things are great! |
They got rid of free returns? No more purchasing for me. |
Just checked website and see they got rid of free shipping end of May. Costs $5.99 to return (presumably by order). Or you can get a free return with store credit plus $5 more.
Hmmm...will make me less of a shill.... |
Wait, why did free returns go away? ![]() I agree on the hit-or-miss aspect. I tend to check out a few designers because the quality is dependable. Nice Things (Portugese), Eva Franco and Leota (American), Blutsgeschwister (German). I've stopped buying mystery dresses from designers I don't recognize. If the item has a pattern, check it out with the zoom feature. Once I was surprised that the cute toile print actually involved skeletons. Also, be sure to check the length - I'm too old to wear minis to the office, although maybe you aren't. |
Good customer service since I had a rather complex sizing question (would size 12 with 36 DD fit in a medium since the large was too big). The dress itself didn't last long. |
I hate the ads that show the clothes but not on actual people. So telling. Just go over to zappos. |
Another modcloth thread:

Those are just the ads though. ModCloth has a great community that posts pictures, both in their reviews and in the Style Gallery, so you can see what the clothes look like on real people. The Style Gallery will show you which pieces to but to put together an outfit, accessories and all. All pictures are sent in by actual customers. (I may have a couple of pictures up there. ![]() |
