The mayor would be wise to look to Portland as an example of these progressive policies and bike lanes run amok. Small businesses (and large) cannot sustain doing business there. Their beloved REI just announced closure. DC has a very similar vocal progressive demographic that is taking control of government at all levels. They need to be stopped before it’s too late.

Lies again. The Portland REI is closing due to theft, including by a CAR ramming into it.

Did you just quote the Daily Mail UK online as a factual source?

Where’s the lie? Is the rising crime and degenerate behavior not an example of progressive policies run amok?

So is the planet unfortunately. Thanks, in part, of course to suburbanites who insist on an untrammeled right to drive and park absolutely everywhere they want to and aggressively oppose any efforts to develop infrastructure that encourage the use of forms of transportation that are less harmful for the rest of the planet’s population.

I think it's unfair to blame suburbanites, in this case. The blame here goes to DC residents and business owners who insist on an untrammeled right to drive and park absolutely everywhere they want to and aggressively oppose any efforts to develop infrastructure that encourage the use of forms of transportation that are less harmful for the rest of the planet’s population.

sir, this is a discussion about bike lanes. certainly a bike would not have been able to do the same damage to the REI as the car.

No doubt the car crash was caused by "bike lanes run amok"! Somebody better go warn the REI at Pike + Rose to beware. It's dangerously close to the Old Georgetown bike lanes, you know.

I am sure that REI is more concerned about the gun shots, crime, disorder and lack of parking for customers to do things like easily drop off bicycles for repairs, pick up your freshly relaxed skis or load your brand new kayak. Urbanism is good. Urbanism that has gone too far is not so good.

221 spots in a parking garage in the same building as the REI, with 2 hours for free while shopping at REI, is not enough parking for customers?

Where do you live? Why do you post about places that you have never been? REI is in a stand-alone building with zero parking spaces. There is a garage across the street, but that doesn’t help with the loading/unloading bulk items problem.

Oh, you weren't referring to the REI in Portland, Oregon, you were referring to the REI at Pike and Rose. The reference to "gun shots, crime, and disorder" made me think you must be referring to the one in Portland, because it certainly doesn't describe the one at Pike and Rose.

Anyway, fortunately the REI at Pike and Rose has a loading zone right in front of the store, so you don't have to worry.

There's an REI in DC too. That one does not have parking. I can't speak to the rest of PP's description because I find the neighborhood it's in to be fine. However, the parking and traffic situation near it is so bad that I drive the extra 15 miles to go to Rockville instead.

Isn't there a public parking garage with 168 spaces next to the Uline Arena building?

There is a public parking garage with a lot of space there! Not sure if it's 168 spaces, but the few times I've driven, I've street-parked with no problem. And for the person who goes 15 miles out of their way to "Rockville", there doesn't seem to be a spot in the District that it is 15 miles farther to go to the REI in North Bethesda.

I mean, the DC REI is in the middle of a dense urban area, steps away from the metro, and yes, very bikeable/walkable. It is not primarily meant for people to drive to from across town. That's not the model.
