I am considering to volunteer for this position, what does this entail?
|
| It's a PITA. Don't do it. |
Me again. Here are the responsibilities listed on the VYS site: The Team Manager is responsible for logistical management of a team. Duties and Responsibilities: • Serve as a liaison with VYS in coordination with the AGC to arrange field space for practices. •Works with coaches, trainers and AGC to help organize team functions. • Monitor player registrations with the league for the whole team, ensuring that all materials are submitted correctly and in a timely manner, and that player passes and rosters are properly maintained. • Ensure that a team treasurer maintains finances for the team, including payment of all league, training and tournament costs, as applicable. Financial matters should be handled by someone other than the team manager. •Ensures that team registration for tournaments is handled appropriately. • Organize parent volunteers for all team-related activities. • Identify at least one volunteer to serve as the Team Sportsmanship Liaison, the person responsible for reminding spectators to only make positive comments to/about all players, coaches and referees. • Ensure that team players and parents comply with VYS policies, including Field Use Policies. This includes ensuring that at least one parent from the team is present throughout each practice session. • Ensure that financial and logistical matters are available to team parents prior to and at the end of each seasonal year. • Team managers are expected to follow and respect the direction of the Technical Director and the professional staff. |
| The biggest hassle is the carding process. You need to get proof of age and other info from each player and get it all registered. You probably won't have MD players in VYS but we did and it added another layer of paperwork. On our team there was a lot of change each season so it was a constant process. Also have to deal with uniform orders (getting sizes, money, etc -the kit was decided by the club). That was also an every season thing for the new players. But overall it's not a bad thing and someone needs to do it. |
| As a VYS parent, let me tell you it's PITA. If you are doing, get someone to do it with you. There is a lot of information you have to get, pictures, etc. Also, you have to have your notebook at every game to check in all the players. If you have a sub player you have to have their card. The managers that did it this past year said it was a lot of work. You have to attend meetings, get uniforms ordered and organized. it's not just the tasks outlined by VYS. then you may get extra tasks from your coach(s). PITA |

As a wise woman once wrote in response to a post bashing those of who don't do enough for the PTA...
Some do a lot for the school, some for their kid's team, some for church.... not always the same people. Yes, it can be a PITA. But teams count on someone to step up. Maybe this can be your thing? |
| our club splits manager and uniform organizer. |
|
| On our U18 team, we have separated the tasks so we have a manager (who deals with the coach, scheduling, team emails and communications, applying for tournaments, parent questions generally, dealing with the club, a million other little things), a registrar (who does the rostering - big job once a year, some smaller tasks if someone joins/leaves), a uniform coordinator (not a big job, generally a big push every other year and when new players join), a webmaster, a treasurer, a parent who handles the hotel reservations and logistics for away tournaments. Every parent is expected to participate in fundraising events (organizing, hounding their kids to sell raffle tix etc.) It is a *&?*-load of work (pretty much a part-time job - stuff to do every day) to run a high-level travel team, but if you break up the tasks it's much more manageable. |
| It is a huge job and time commitment. I have been a coach for many years, and in my experience a talented manager is a huge plus. But only plan to do it for a year or 2. And if you can split some of the duties do it. |
| The carding process can be very cumbersome and time consuming but once you do it one time it isn't terrible. The rest requires good communication skills and some organizational skills. I've (mainly) enjoyed it. |
Ours too. Also designate someone as your tournament coordinator and team treasurer. |
Use an app called Team Snap... 2 of my sons' teams use this app and it is magical.

As a travel team manager for the past three years, I can tell you that it is time consuming, but rewarding. The hardest year is the U9 age group, because the whole team is new to the VYSA system. After that, the rostering process was easy because most players were returning players.
My mistake was doing it all....I was treasurer, social person,etc... And I have been burnt out. Love the idea of having a uniform chairperson, a treasurer, a tournament organizer, etc.... Met some amazing friends doing what I have been doing. |
