Hi-I realize that there may be a better way to make it to ocean city new jersey from DC (495) using backroads. Thinking some Philly/NJ people who have gone to Ocean City New Jersey may know some less traveled routes. Thanks for any advice. We are driving tomorrow and I think traffic may be awful![]() |
Over the DE bridge, through Bridgeton, take Buckchetem and then cut across the Peninsula.

We once did this via backroads. It was godawful. Unbelievable. People eat their children. |
No no no. I am originally from NJ, right outside of Philly.
Take, 95 to Delaware 295, to 42 AC expressway to Garden State Parkway. Avoid Wilmington 95/495 as there is going to be construction/closures on there all summer. Take 295 Delaware Memorial Bridge. The construction is all done. The back roads are all one lane, lots of trucks/tractors you get stuck behind. It may look easier on the map but it is not. I worked in a hospital in bumble-f and had summer houses in Margate. Serious road rage going 40mph behind trucks. |
So....you just pass the trucks. NBD. I take back roads similar to the other PP's route, but can't remember all of the specific roads. - SJ native with beach house in Avalon |
Someone posted these directions for me last year and I used them. They were great -- spot on and nice back roads through NJ. Also, there is always the Ferry, which is fun.
I-95 thru Delaware, cross the Del-Mem Bridge. Take the "last exit before toll" (Rt. 40). Follow it thru Woodstown and Elmer to Rt. 55. Exit onto 55 is just before you get to Malaga. Go South on 55 through Vineland and Millville. Exit onto Rt. 49 (look for the big water tower off the highway). Follow 49 to Tuckahoe. Turn right onto Rt. 50, and follow till you get to the split off to Tuckahoe Road. (623?). At Marmora, the road turns into Roosevelt Blvd. follow Roosevelt Blvd across Rt. 9 and under the GSP and into OCNJ. (This route will drop you onto the island at 34th Street. Have a great vacation! (3 to 3.5 hours, depending on where you are starting from and when you are going 'down the shore.) |
Avalon is further south which is different. There are only so many passing areas and also filled with lights/turns. I worked at Salem Memorial years ago and lived in Margate every summer. I would always try both. Was faster to fly down 296 and AC expressway - every single time. Not sure how different Avalon/Wildwood would be. The only way I would recommend a newbie to take the back roads for AC/Margate/OC is if there is a massive accident/back-up. |
