UChicago is a great school and is a place plenty of people have as their top choice, especially in the Midwest. It just isn't a universally recognized top 10 or even 15 type of school (just ask Forbes and the WSJ). All these top schools are elite but some names resonate more with some than others. You don't have to hate on Chicago to also value Georgetown. They are two of the best real city universities. It is interesting that Georgetown has the name recognition Chicago would like (is it like a CUNY?) and Chicago has the $$ Georgetown craves. |
Maybe among the general population, this is true, but that’s entirely to do with sports. You realize that, right? Most people know about schools because they see them playing NCAA football or basketball. UChicago opted out of all of that in the 1930s. Anyone who knows anything about higher ed knows UChicago is a peer school to the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, etc. I went to UChicago and Georgetown. While I think Georgetown is top of the line at preparing students for careers in the foreign policy establishment, UChicago provides a more intellectually rigorous education. My husband works in higher ed and his view is that UChicago as an academic institution is among the top 2-3 in the country. |
Oh and Georgetown’s name recognition comes from basketball.
UChicago’s money comes from them having an endowment for over a century, whereas Georgetown only started building theirs up when a lay person took over as President in 2001. |
Ohmigod do you ever stop? You are so stupid. |
What an incisive argument! You convinced me! |
If you have a 35-36 ACT and/or 1540-1560 SAT and an unweighted 3.9-4.0, ace your interview and write 4 killer essays, you can get in.
It’s one of the only schools that is NOT test optional and requires an interview. It’s a very hard admit. Nobody from our APS high school got accepted last year. |
If you run a 4.4/40, broad jump 10' and have a 36" vertical you can get in. Ask me how I know. |
1410 is the 25% of admit. 1560? Lol, no |
And that’s the case at virtually every school. Is this supposed to be some sort of unique indictment? |
Which is why it is an absolutely incredible feat that their test score averages are so high BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE APPLICANT HAS TO SUBMIT THEIR TEST SCORES. Not so at virtually every other university, including Ivies, etc. |
It isn't actually. My DS was flat out told his grades/scores weren't high enough by a couple of other schools, but they were D3 and not D1 |
When EVERYONE has to submit scores, including all of the varsity athletes, then yes, that is actually pretty impressive. |
+1 OP does not seem very bright. |
It means 25% below 1410. That’s what freshman in hs score at our hs |
UChicago is NOT a peer school to Stanford, MIT, HYP. Maybe it can be considered a peer to the lower ivies but definitely does not have the same “prestige”. |
