Easy to gather that OP is sour-graping some personal regret. Certainly Georgetown isn’t for everyone, particularly OP & son. But GU’s SFS in particular is a gem of a program, which is academically rigorous and tailor made for those aspiring to IR/Intelligence/Political career paths.

Wow. It took you 4 months to make that point.

If not for John Thompson, Patrick Ewing and Sleepy Flyod, Georgetown would still be that school it always was the place where Catholics go when they can’t go to ND or BC.

You were right up until the BC part.
BC has always been easier to get into than Georgetown.

I realized all of this as a high school student at a big three in the nineties. So did my parents and pretty much everyone at my school.

A friend of mine who wasn't a top student in high school wound up attending the College. She told me she was shocked when she got there and realized most of her classmates from around the country had a completely different perception of Georgetown. It was seen as a top choice that was very hard to get into. They were all super excited to be there.

But yes I agree Georgetown doesn't have much money. And I went to a SLAC and think absolutely it offers a better education experience. And some top SLACS can afford to give grants not loans.

Sounds like a very intellectual, academically motivated kid could potentially stand out.

Georgetown (and ND too) has always been harder to get into than BC.....

signed - a person with strong connections to both schools and loves them both.

And - fyi - other than the Jesuit part - Georgetown and BC are quite different communities, schools, experiences - so just because Georgetown is a harder admit and ranked higher, it doesn't mean it would be "preferred" even by a student who could get into both.

Georgetown has an advantage in being primarily focused on the undergraduate education. GU is barely an R1 institution and only maintains this ranking through the medical school. It’s a bad place to be a grad student but the undergrads get better faculty than they would at a higher ranked real research institution. There is a strong safety net.

GU is great for social sciences, humanities , nursing and business but is extremely weak for the sciences, especially computer science, arts and music, etc. On nursing though, unless the interest is in public health policy or academics paying GU tuition for a nursing degree is not going to have any ROI.

The dorms are and have always been a mess. The campus is small. Student body is either international or Jack and Jill Hoya.

If you didn't go to Georgetown, how do you know your school offered a better education? What an odd thing to say.

No kidding. Holy Cross used to be a much tougher admit than BC and, even longer ago, was on par with Georgetown.
