Can we live through floor refinishing?

Anonymous
We are currently living through a renovation and are scheduled to have wood floors refinished by the end of June. I believe it is standard poly finish. Can my family stay or should we head to a hotel?

Go to a hotel. We thought we could stay home the night after our new floors were refinished but the stink was awful. We ended up spending two nights at a hotel.

Hotel - and get as much stuff out of the house as possible. The dust from the sanding and the smell from the finish are no fun.

+ 1

It's a really bad idea to hang around during this project. Expect sawdust to permeate the entire house even before chemicals are applied to the floors.

We camped out in our basement (with the vents blocked) and it was fine. If I did it today, I'd probably make a fun hotel stay out of it (because the $ is not so tight now).

How much does it cost to refinish them? How long does it take?

I'm talking about a home the size of an older Falls Church rambler.

^Apologies to Op for posing this question on this thread as it is a bit OT. It has occurred to me that my own home could go from nice to pretty darned amazing if we simply refinished the floors and possibly extended them into the kitchen. So I'm toying with idea of doing it.

If we only need to move out for a couple of days that wouldn't be that big of a deal to us.

We did this in our old house and thought we could hang in the basement. The fumes were TOXIC. We ended up checking into a hotel in the middle of the night. It was unbearable and probably unsafe.

We did this 7 years ago.

How much are you being charged per sq foot for refinishing? I want to do this at our current home, I just dread it because it is such a pain in the ass!!!

I would time it with vacation and then have cleaner come before I come home

+1 a week.

We were planning on staying in the house, but lasted two hours. Save time and book a hotel.

We did our bedrooms but we DIY'ed and just did 1-2 rooms at a time and sealed them off. When we did the main living areas we moved out for a few days as the smell was terrible and you cannot walk on them immediately.

The fumes will be awful for weeks!

hotel. We did main living room (not bedrooms) and went to a hotel for the night. Only went home the next evening.

That is a gross exaggeration.
