Someone commented in the political forum re: Jill Biden's outfits, that high heeled boots and a skirt is "cheesy" Uh oh. I do this sometimes. Please weigh in. I had no idea. What else is "chessy"???
Thanks! |
I personally like the skirt and boots look...but not for an inaugeration. |
what is cheesy to some, is hip to others. Much of DC is bound to their "play it safe" conservative image. It's no wonder NY, LA, Paris and Milan think we have no sense of fashion. |
I love to wear skirt and boots! |
Agree that it was probably too casual for yesterday, but I bet it gave a little warmth. I like skirt and boots, but I couldn't stop looking at Jill Biden's knees peeking out between the boots and red coat. Some darker stockings would have helped (I didn't watch the rest of the festivities to see what was under the coat) |
I liked it. And if you read Robin Givhan's A1 column in the Post today, she thought that Michelle Obama should have worn boots with one of her whistle-train dresses.
Also, think of the wild approval of Condi's boots with a skirt a few years ago. Perhaps it wasn't inaugural, but the look in general is a good one (according to a few official fashion sources...) |
I think it's sexy, not cheesy. |
I'm the one who said it was cheesy. If you want to look classy (like for business dress or if you are the new VP's wife), the dress/skirt needs to be longer and hide most, if not all, of the knee. I'm not a totally conservative dresser, I just try to avoid cheesy wear. I do like shorter skirts, even minis, with flat boots a lot, but that is obviously very casual. |
Seems like you are in the minority. And maybe we use the word "cheesy" differently? |
As an originator of the term back in highschool, "cheesy," in terms of dress, means tacky, lacking class, overly made-up/accessorized, and extremely cheap looking. Wearing beautiful, heeled boots with a slim skirt hardly meets the definition. In fact, its not even in the ballpark. You are just flat out wrong here. The gap between skirt and boot is currently in fashion and, while I am not a proponent of flesh-toned hosiery, in this case it was probably the best choice. Considering the days' temperature, wind chill, and casualness of past wives outfits at Inaugurations, I also think her outfit was absolutely appropriate. The First Lady looked completely gorgoeus but, she was much more finely dressed than First L:adies in the past. Quite frankly, for the day's events, Jill Biden looked refined, dressed for the cold, and absolutely inauguralesque. |
I think I lived in NY for too long to think this look is anything but cheesy. I've never seen anyone who I thought had much of a sense of style wear it. But, I will give you that it is popular. Popular and fashionable are not coterminous. |
The look itself isn't cheezy - but it certainly is inappropriate for a 57 year old woman to wear to her husband's inauguration as vice president of the United States! Michelle Obama dressed perfectly for the occasion, conservative, elegant and ladylike, yet injected her own modern personal style by selecting a color and fabric that was not a traditional choice. Jill looked a little out of place and in over her head, to be honest. Same with her bright red, low cut gown for the balls. She needs a stylist. |
Thank goodness a NYC mom has weighed in to clear this up for us. |
Op Here: Whew! I will go back to my a-line or straight slim skirts and boots. I tend to wear a chunkier heel with a skirt, but if going out with my husband I may pull out the slim heeled boots. I usually pair this combo with a slim fitting cashmere sweater and opaque tights. Sounds like I will not get arrested by the fashion police.
Now, what do people think about leggings, tall boots and a long wrap sweater? A look I see around and like. This is if you are tall and slim but nearing 40? |
You should do it, though I prefer skinny jeans to leggings. My fathers late '80s disapproval of my pre-teen leggings keeps echoing in my head, see, so I'm still not a fan. I envy you for being tall and slim... |
