Orange Is The New Black

We are watching this now.

I find the show well done and like watching it. The only thing that holds me back is how hopelessly immature I find both Piper and her fiancee Larry. Are we supposed to dislike them so intensely? Sometimes I feel like I'm watching Legally Blonde.

Just wait. that's all I'll say

Yes, because she's basically just used as a prop to appeal to the schadenfreude of upper middle class white women everywhere who may or may not harbor a fantasy or deep fears about going to prison themselves. Eventually, it becomes obvious she's used as a prop to showcase some ridiculous stereotypes of women of color and lesbians. The whole thing is designed so that the audience can feel better about herself by giving that sensation of looking down your nose at someone. She's the opposite of a sympathetic character.

+1
I becomes so addictive as it goes along. I found myself obsessed with some of the characters. Can't wait for Season 2!!

It's not a very good show, OP.

Of course you are suppose to hate her.

Her real name is Piper Eressea Kerman. REALLY ... somebody named their child Piper Eressea.

She is wealthy and she grew up in Boston and she went to Smith College.

You can't make this shit up. She is pathetic.

OP again.

I guess having read the book I expected a little self reflection and a little brains. Not constant whining and high school level bickering.

Yes, you are supposed to not like Piper and Jason Biggs. That's partly what's funny about it.

I love all the other characters on the show. It's really well written.

Okay, that's exactly where I'm at. Good to know.

Why would you expect that? Wait until "crazy eyes" tells piper what she thinks of her, very insightful... I wish that part were true.

Still worked up about this, huh? I remember you from last year.

Seriously. I love the show and don't feel as though I'm looking down my nose at any of the characters. I even like Piper because I feel she starts out as vapid and silly, but learns a lot about humanity as the show goes along. I find each and every character on the show intriguing and I'm always left wanting more after each episode. I guess the PP sees what she wants to see, but I just enjoy the show for what it is: extremely well-acted entertainment.

OP here...I've now watched all of Season I and I have very mixed feelings. I really like the characters but Piper/Larry are so incredibly immature. And are we supposed to believe that Piper beat that woman to death?

Piper didn't beat Pennsatucky to death. But maybe Tucky will get some new teeth out of the whole thing, which would be a win for her.

I almost think Piper deliberately did that -- beat her in the mouth. Of course, she had to defend herself and she was furious, but I think in the back of her mind she was thinking Pennsatucky would then get new teeth and be in her debt. Maybe.
