Having gone through this process twice now one for Div 1 and one for Div 3 program(s) I feel qualified to speak on the process. In fact I feel like I could write a book on the matter. Helping/advising others that we know if they need it and happy to answer any questions you have regarding the process. Anyone who wants to come and bash the sport of the very over talked about "lax culture" on this thread I would really appreciate keeping it to the topic at hand. |
RECRUITED - SP![]() |
What is your HHI?
How much have you spent on lax from middle school thru high school? Do you feel your sons "made" club teams or they got on club teams based on recommendations (aka who you knew)? |
Besides playing in college and scholarships that come with that, what are some other benefits of playing? |
BFD. Get back to us when your kid's recruited to play football, basketball or baseball. |
How much scholarship money - each year - did each receive? Honestly~ |
Is there professional lacrosse or is it an Olympic sport? Or is there a lot of money to be made in broadcast rights or merchandise? If not, why do colleges give scholarships to players? How does that help the universities? |
Not OP, but this is such a lame question. There actually is professional lacrosse but until recently, was not much of a big deal. Paul Rabil became the first professional lacrosse player to secure $1 million in endorsements recently. Division 1 lacrosse is broadcast on EspnU. I think the school I attended -- Johns Hopkins -- does make a fair amount from merchandising of lacrosse merchandise and would expect that most of the ACC schools with teams do as well as ND, Denver, etc. . . Lacrosse has been part of the olympics in the past and there are efforts to bring it back -- there is a world championship. |
Hopefully it will replace football. |
Looking forward to OP's response, ignoring the snark here hopefully. |
OP here not sure what you mean by HHI. I can honestly say both of my sons legitimately made their respective teams, we were new to the area so didn't have the "connections" or pull that some refer to as leverage to get their sons on the more desirable teams. My oldest son played for what is arguably the best team in the area but didn't' care for many of the kids so after 2 years switched to another respectable team where he was much happier. Fit cannot be stressed enough. I cannot however discount that LIKE IN ALL SPORTS, in lacrosse it is at times how you know as it is a very almost incestuous community of adults that are sometimes more obsessed with the sport than their own kids ![]() |
The camaraderie with the other players, in my oldest sons case he has made some amazing friendships with his fellow players, has a great connection with his coaches and it has no doubt really elevated the college experience for him, the thrill of getting to play on a big stage in front of big crowds is exhilarating and the icing on the cake after his devotion in high school to the sport. He is a solid student but there are many resources for the athletes in the way of tutors/enrichment/remedial help. They get to plan their schedules ahead of the vast majority of students to accommodate practice/game schedules. In the case of my son who is going D3, it is all the above less the extra help, that for the most part is not offered and typically these kids are already a very solid student academically, this is at least my understanding as them getting in on the merit of their lacrosse talent is as relevant as their academics. One cannot replace the other with D3. |
Household income I ask you HHI because it is about $2000/yr and then about $1500 for summer club. Also, my son feels the same way about the "fit" and we don't have that issue with other sports. He has made his teams but then he find out who made the team and it is like WTF happened. The kids that make the team are good but not always the best kids. Did you redshirt? Btw.. He LoVES he sport, I have not found a "good fit" so we just deal with arrogance. |
Yes as a matter of fact there is a professional lacrosse league, neither of my sons plans to go that far (not saying they could) but it does exist though very underpaid in comparison to football/basketball/baseball. I think however that may well. An Olympic sport? Not yet but I could see it happening. Prestige is one angle for colleges (talking big D1 programs) that are known for the lacrosse clubs. |
D1- partial scholarship about 20% of total tuition (averaged) D3- nothing they don't award scholarships/money |
