in Obama.
--He does not seem interested in going after the criminals in the Bush administration because of his bi-partisan "let's all be friends" orientation. Geeze, we wouldn't be in this Iraq war or this nasty recession were it not for the Bush administration's crimes. And that's the tip of the iceberg. --The Geithner nomination was not properly vetted or spun. The tax man can't figure out his own taxes? It's not just "embarassing" as Obama said. It's stupid. --The stimulus package is questionable at best. Half of it is for tax cuts that are politically-motivated, but won't help the economy. Why not spend that money on providing health insurance for all Americans, as he promised. --Burris is a true embarassment. Why didn't Obama sit the thing out instead of chiming in and looking stupid, like all the Democrats who opposed seating Burris. Running a brilliant campaign is not the same thing as running a country. But I'd hoped for better from Obama. |
Right on.
But don't forget that cheesy letter he wrote to his daughters that was published in Parade (?) magazine. I mean, give me a break, don't you normally keep those type of feelings and conversations in the privacy of your own home? What was the point of printing it publicly? I guess he's trying to win Best Dad of the Year award. |
I will take your points in order. 1. Do you really want Obama and his team to spend teme and money with endless special investigations, commissions and trials that will end with not a single person going to jail! Most of us may disagree with the Iraq war (in hindsight), but it was "legal". Congress approved it and trying to prove that they acted on intentionlly false information will be very hard (not even sure if this is illegal). 2. I agree with you on this one, but also think that Geithner made a mistake and it should not be a big deal. The taxes were eventually paid. 3. Do not know enough about the package, but curious how you think that spending the $800 billion on healthcare will help the economy. 4. Agreed. BTW, I think we should give Obama a chance to "run" the country before deciding that he is doing a bad job at it. BTW, I also think that we should all adjust our expectations. He is a politician, not GOD! |
Go after the "criminals" how exactly? What crimes? I'm not an R but really what are you talking about and what would it serve at this point?
Geithner . . . fair enough. But it is one nomination out of many. People DO make mistakes. The stimulus package and healthcare are not related. And, the stimulus package as presented is not yet a done deal. Thre is still much discussion to be had. BO had nothing to do with the Burris appointment. I too opposed seating him as a matter of principle. But, legally and strategically, they had to do it. And, they did. This will be forgotten in no time. The fact is he hasn't "run a country yet." And, you imply that he can't or shouldn't make mistakes. He isn't perfect and won't be perfect. Your nitpicking. |
I think you should rephrase your disappointment in terms of how you would run things. Start with how you would get to a 100% error-free nominee vetting process. Then go into your own approach to a stimulus package. Then let's hear about the rest.
|
C'mon -- what were you expecting? Ultimately he is going to disappoint, like any other president. I voted for him expecting that I would be out picketing him on something within six months. But that's the nature of the office. If you're upset now, you will never make it through the next four years! |
I've been hoping that the minute Obama finishes the Oath of Office, a whole pile of subpoenas are going out to the Bush folk who engineered many of the messes we are in. In particular, I think Karl Rove and Cheney as well as Bush should go to jail. No one is available to pardon them now. The Democrats should force Scooter Libby to spill the beans on his former bosses, and jail him if he refuses to speak.
I'm not suggesting going after everyone, just the guys at the top responsible for the most egregious crimes. It's like getting Al Capone for failing to pay taxes. Put Bush, Cheney and Rove in jail for breaking Federal law when they fired all those US attorneys. If there are no consequences, we'll see this behavior again and again. In theory I like Obama's 'let's all be friends' idea, but in practice, you can't let them get away with raping our country. More than 4,000 American soldiers have died in Iraq. How can these people sleep at night? Let them sleep in jail, I say. I think extending unemployment benefits and infrastructure and alternative energy projects are a good idea. They will help keep people afloat until they find new jobs, and will create some jobs. Providing health insurance to the uninsured is something that needs to be done. Giving tax cuts to businesses, and putting some change in people's pockets through a small tax cut won't do anything to stimulate the economy, so why waste money on that? What I don't admire is Obama's eagerness to compromise, to make a pact with the Devil(s). Perhaps he has a long-term strategy, but I'm not happy with what I've seen so far. Leadership is all about perception. Obama's running the country now, and I don't see strong leadership. I don't want Obama to go the way of Clinton, a worthless president in my opinion. His willingness to move to the center created the opportunity Karl Rove needed to position GWB as a "compassionate conservative," which we all know was b.s. but confused enough voters to put him in office. 9/11 put Bush back into office. If everything Obama does gets reversed by the next Republican administration (as the Bush folk did to much of Clinton's initiatives), then his presidency will have failed as well. |
I agree, he is getting the shittiest job in the world
You forget, it is almost a crime to lose your job, or to even be uninsured. |
"If everything Obama does gets reversed by the next Republican administration (as the Bush folk did to much of Clinton's initiatives), then his presidency will have failed as well. "
Jesus H! The guy has not even gotten past inauguration and your doing a post-mortem of his entire presidency??? GMAB! And, as for "eagerness to compromise" . . . after the last eight years of the slash and burn tactics, I don't see why this is necessarily a bad thing. Of course, I do hope liberal perspectives carry the day on some things (b/c that is my leaning). |
I feel like it's been 6 months since the election! I cannot wait for Obama to really finally be in charge.
WRT OP's points, 1.I think it's possible that Obama isn't showing us his whole set of cards. Especially since technically we're still in transition. Why alert the current administration to any possible investigations? 2. No comment--don't really care, 3. I worry about giving more money to the banks who used the first half to buy tax shelters and such and not to lend money to businesses. I hope Obama will have a much better, braver oversight team in place. 4. No comment--don't know enough, or care enough. To the first poster who replied to OP--I thought the letter was great. Also, it's an inspiration to other parents as well. |
As much as I disliked the Bush administration, I think it would be hard to make a criminal case against the administration officials. Exactly what charges do you want brought against whom and based on what evidence?
According to a story I heard on NPR, the transition team actually DID know about Geithner's tax problem but just didn't consider it serious enough to not proceed with the nomination. I don't think you can blame bad vetting. Interestingly, most Republicans apparently don't truly think it is a big deal either.
The stimulus money only serves as a stimulus if the money is spent on things already in the works anyway, eg. approved infrastructure projects . The costs of universal health cover is new spending, which is different altogether. By the way, a lot of economists disagree with your statement that tax cuts don't help the economy.
If Burris is a true embarassment, why shouldn't Obama have chimed in and why do Dems that opposed him look stupid? Your statement seems to contradict itself. |
Scooter Libby was tried and convicted of a crime. Do you think he's the one bad apple in the entire Bush administration?
The US Attorney scandal is an example of criminal behavior on the part of Bush administration officials, quite possibly going up as far as Bush and Cheney themselves. They should be prosecuted and jailed. With no consequences, such behavior will be repeated again by the next Republican administration. |
Libby was just the fall guy. When Jeb Bush runs and rigs the election to win, yes, they will continue this evil conduct. |
No, I don't think Libby was the one bad apple, and I don't even think he was the worst apple. I agree that the parade of Bush's Attorney Generals and the DOJ scandals were disgusting. I also think that there were a lot of actions in the Bush administration that were morally repugnant. However, it would also be extremely difficult (not to mention expensive, divisive, etc.) to build a criminal case against a public official over actions commited while in public office. I therefore don't hold it against Obama that prosecuting Bush administration officials isn't a top priority. |
I think the OP might be suffered from a case of BLS Battered Liberal Syndrome
