Boxing?

Anyone ever take boxing? Any suggestions for a total newb about where to consider signing up for boxing (as a workout, and less because they want to try amateur boxing)

I used to box; it was offered at the gym I attended and I had a little previous experience with stand-up sparring, so I figured I'd give it a try. I still fool around with it whenever I have time, which unfortunately isn't very often these days. It's an absolute blast, but not for everyone. Plenty of gyms offer classes where you can stick with hitting heavy bags or speed bags which are excellent for cardio and will give you a great upper body workout. I bet you can find that stuff at Lifetime, Gold's, etc. If you do decide you want to do actual sparring, you'll need to look for a gym with a ring and boxing coaches. Most places will let you try out a couple classes before you sign up. If that's what you want, let me know your location and I can probably give you some recommendations.

I used to do it, but the gym was in NY. It was the only workout I ever truly enjoyed, and I miss it. I haven't been able to find a gym down here located near me, but I highly recommend you try it.

PP who mentioned recommendations for sparring - can you give any recs near Tyson's Corner? Alternately, any at-home workouts (DVDs or whatever). Thanks!

Let me call around tomorrow and I'll see what I can do. Off the top of my head, I know there's an LA Boxing, now renamed UFC Gym right there, but I can't vouch for it personally. I've been to one of their other locations and wasn't too impressed; it was a lot more "feel good" than serious training, despite what the name implied. YMMV at other locations, though. If you want an excellent gym in the Tyson's Corner area that offers a wrestling/ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focus with an emphasis on that kind of sparring, check out Dave Jacob's school: http://therockbjj.com.

Thanks PP. I joined that LA Boxing for awhile and hated it! My impressions were very similar to yours. I thought about going back when I saw it was rebranded, but I figured it was still more of the same (it's the same company, I'm still on their email list).
