Does anyone have experience with this camp? Do they learn sewing techniques, knitting, etc? What kind of projects do they work on? Also, do any boys attend? We're considering the half day camp for our daughter but realized that our son (kindergarten) might be able to do it as well. Any information you can share about experiences at this camp would be appreciated. We're considering the one offered at Bullis. Thanks.

DD attended the handwork camp three years in a row and LOVED it! She's bummed that she can't go this year because of travel.
She attended at Sidwell in DC. The older kids work with sewing machines and create clothes- but DD attended when she was 6, 7 and 8 y/o. They worked on lots of projects and it seemed like a relaxed nurturing environment- kids work at their own pace and there are lots of adult there to help. There were two boys in DD's group during her first year but I hadn't noticed any during her subsequent years (though that doesn't mean there weren't any) I've lost track of all of her projects over the years but here are a few: sewing stuffed animals, wonder knitting projects, she's made bags, worked with felting, dyeing fabric- the list goes on. DD will certainly go back next year if we can fit it in- I have have nothing but wonderful things to say about the camp. She really liked learning/improving her handwork skills, she also liked not spending all day in the sweltering heat. They had lunch inside and then went out for about an hour to the playground. I'm sure it will be the same at Bullis. I could go on and on- it's DD's favorite camp!! |
DD went last year as a rising 1st grader and is going back again this year. They didn't learn how to knit, but she learned lots of other ways to occupy her time with yarn -- our plane trip later that summer was so easy! There was at least one boy in her group last summer, but it was overwhelmingly girls.
Similar experience - my daughter has done it for the past 4 years at Sidwell. She did Handwork a number of sessions - made pillows, animals, messenger bags, etc. She did Machine Sewing this past year - made a dress, quilt, skirts, etc. And is doing the Fashion Boot Camp this summer! Great program - she has learned a number of crafting skills, has her own machine at home now. Very laid back atmosphere, music playing, kids on the floor crafting. She loves it. Again boys - usually a handful but typically majority girls.
this is great! do you have suggestions for pre-Ks (i.e. 4 year olds)?
Sorry, can someone tell me where this camp (or camps) is/are held? Sounds great!
