Q1 parent: "your Q4 kid sucks and is so lame, no talent anyway, RAE is nonsense, even if they play "play down" next year they'll still suck and by the way its SO lame to "play down" to begin with since they'll be the oldest on the team and they'll have an unfair advantage over the majority of the players on that younger team. and oh by the way if your kid looks good on that lower team its only because they're unfairly the oldest not because they're the best, get over it your kid isn't that good"
Q4 parent: "by that definition, isn't your awesome Q1 kid right now actually just "playing down" against my Q4 kid?" Q1 parent: ... |
Feeling like many won't believe it until first kickoff in September 2025. |
They’ll believe it when all the Q3/4 show up to tryouts. That’s when reality will set in. |
lol. Nailed it...all 250 pages of this thread summed up nicely. Not mad tho. I would be upset if I lost a built in advantage, too. We all would. My family is playing it cool on the sidelines but behind closed doors we're laughing at the thought of my October daughter up against girls several months younger than her and we can't wait to jump ship! Nothing better than a gift you didn't ask for... |
This is a really funny come t probably authored by a U13 parent. The development phase thru club soccer is done by HS. It’s about exposure —which you can’t get as a trapped player as being off cycle for showcases and cut out of them all together in some cases. Peace out. My player will continue to start on a grade appropriate team like they did playing ‘up’ —development will come from stuff done outside of club. They could not be more excited. By your logic your player should be soooo excited for the golden opportunity to now play up under SY! Think of all the great development they will get now that they are no longer playing down with trapped kids… |
100% agree, my son is October 2012. By the way, he is the max scorer of his 2012 team (ECNL Texas area). |

Well figured out why DCUM is so one sided on certain topics. Looks like you get banned if you're not part of the girl dad ECNL SY cult.
Just another echo chamber like reddit. Have fun anonymously agreeing with each other. |
Who is getting "banned" for wanting to keep BY? Have you considered that maybe parents of trapped players are simply more interested in the possible change and happen to comment more? Also, this has been a huge topic of discussion for months and has brought in people from all over the U.S. to threads like these/SoCal forum/Talking Soccer. -Signed parent of 2013 Q4 Pre-ECNL starting player who doesn't care what ultimately happens but am following the discussion closely to be prepared. |
Yeah, it's someone else's fault not yours. Signed, boy dad. |
do you plan to have your kid tryout for ecnl assuming this change happens for next year or will you level out? We are in a similar boat and can see ecnl saying come back next year even if our daughter is good enough to make the team. |
| Obviously no one is getting banned and reasonable arguments are welcome, but when Q1 BY parents comment that the system works as it is, and that Q4 players just suck…ultimately Q1 dad is scared that their kid just sucks with the new 12 month age range. Not a 2-3 year age range, a 12 month age range. No one is banned. The majority have read about the systemic issues with BY for trapped players. The majority of people understand which frustrates Q1 RAE advantaged dad. |

When did being born in Q1 and Q2 give an automatic advantage in skills, soccer iq and athleticism to everyone?
Relative Age Effect studies don't show all q1 and q2 are better soccer players than q3 and q4 It shows that clubs and coaches select-bias good q1 and q2 more physical players over good q3 and q4 less physically developed players. I have no idea why this narrative has taken over this thread that all these Q1 and Q2 kids with low technical skills, bad decision making, poor iq and the agility of a newborn giraff have an automatic advantage over a Q4 who is actually a good soccer player. Parents convince themselves of anything |
Pretty basic. Currently, Q1/2 have RAE advantage and Q3/4 has disadvantage. Going to SY more or less makes Q4/1 have RAE advantage and Q2/3 have disadvantage. |

This change will really help kids who are middle of roster players that are q3+q4. My child is a q3 that starts 60% of the time, if this change occurs they will start and probably not come out of the game with SY grouping.
Bottom of roster kids will only see a short term benefit with a change. The top kids will be hurt. But the vast majority of the roster falls between kids 5-15. For the q3-q4 kids in that position a huge benefit. Likewise, the q1&q2 kids in that spot could be pushed to bottom of roster or off all together by the trapped kids moving down. These are the parents that are the loudest against the change. |
Explain advantage and disadvantage in this context If you're not a good player born in January or September, what does a cutoff date change do for you? |
