Best mixed drink recipes - one girlie cocktail, one manly cocktail, and one shot

Anonymous
I'm in a little competition with a friend of mine. We do an annual camping trip and this year we will be bringing our best 3 drinks (see title) to the table. Post your favorite recipe and I'll start mixing and let you know which one's I've chosen to use and which ones win!!

Don't know if this counts as girlie or manly, but we were at 8407 Kitchen Bar last weekend and the male waiter recommended the ginger lime martini, which I liked very much:

2 oz vodka
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz ginger syrup

Maybe it's time to move up from the shot to something that you sip.

Depending on what people like,
Scotch: Lagavulin or Macallan
Rye: Pigwhistle
Bourbon: Elijah Craig (you can do higher-shelf than that, like Blanton's or Knob Creek, but Elijah Craig has a nice balance of sweet and spicy that goes nice around a campfire)
Tequila: Herradura Anejo or Sauza Commemorativo
Rum: there are a bunch of artisan rums out there, sort of the latest thing, but I haven't caught up with them. Ask your bartender or bottle shop owner.

While you're at it, pick up some cigars to go with what you're sipping. Arturo Fuentes are nice.

For summer you almost can't go wrong with a gimlet - equal parts gin and Rose's Lime shaken with ice. So easy and pretty much everyone loves it - I usually add an extra squeeze of fresh lime juice.

Hmm. Make homemade grenadine (pomegranate syrup) and go from there.

I've been liking sidecards lately--cognac (Pierre Ferrand), lemon, Cointreau

The sidecar is my favorite drink. Delicious.

I also like a dark and stormy.

I don't think of either as girly, but I am a female.

And i agree- not sure how old you are, but how can you judge best shot The one that burns the most going down? That category should be sipping, and you bring some finer liquor to savor. It'll still get you drunk, but in a more civilized way (especially when camping - you do a shot, you get drunk, you sit around campfire - why not sip and savor around campfire - same end result, different path to get there).

Girly:

The Metropolitan (a sour cherry cosmo):
1.5 oz Raw cherry juice (available at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods)
2 oz Vodka
.5 oz Cointreau

Shake over ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass, garnish with maraschino cherry or orange slice.

Manly, or at least gentlemanly:

Mint Julep:
* Muddle 3 sprigs mint and 1 oz simple syrup in the bottom of a julep cup (12 oz pewter or aluminum)
* Add 2 oz Kentucky bourbon
* Fill to the top with crushed ice. Stir once, then use your palm to firmly press the ice into the cup.
* Fill with bourbon until about 3/4 inch below the rim. This will melt some of the ice, so add more crushed ice, again firmly pressing it into the cup, until you can't fit any more in and the ice is slightly above the rim.
* Garnish with mint sprig.
* Enjoy.

This is great for hot summer days. You can barely hold the drink it's so cold, and if you've done it right, frost will form on the outside of the cup. At the beginning, you smell mint and taste cold, watery bourbon. At the end it tastes just like sweet tea.

I'm guessing by "shot" the OP is talking about a mixed drink shot, not just straight whiskey or something like that. So just buying an expensive bottle of liquor and sipping it would not really be what the OP is looking for.

OP, for shots, try a dirty girl scout. I don't really have a recipe for it, but we'd just mix vodka, Bailey's, Kahlua, and creme de menthe.

Thanks pp. Yes by shot I meant a mixed drink shot.

Thank you for all of the ideas/recipes so far!! I'm going to start making some of them to figure out which I will bring on the trip in a few weeks.

Girlie drink: Lemon twist - lemoncello and prosecco (occasionally I add a little absolut citron vodka for extra oomph) garnished with a twist of lemon rind

Manly drink: Old fashion - simple syrup, water, bitters, bourbon whiskey garnished with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry

Shot: Chocolate covered pretzel - whip cream vodka & frangelico rimmed with salt

Another girlie drink: Skyy moscato vodka, cranberry juice & fresh lime over ice
