Finally |
This is an odd comfort, that although I thought my numbers were in the bottom 25%, they were likely in the middle 2/3s. So much demand for so few seats! |
@dcpcsb: RT @SDPearson: 18,419 names on DC charter wait lists; 7,205 unique students. Still 368 spaces left in "Tier 1" charters.... |
I would like to lay these numbers against DCPS numbers for PK3, and see if DC is truly able to offer universal PK3. I'm not talking preferences, Tier 1, anything just sheer number of seats. I know of at least 6 families shut out, and that's just amongst the people I have chatted with on the playground, etc. |
Yeah, it took them all of 12 hours into May 1 to post it. Slackers. Said it on a different thread- the PCSB is probably the best DC public-ish entity in terms of putting data/documents online in a really accessible format. They also started webcasting their meetings, in addition to really good Twitter updates during the meetings. |
How is it that schools have open spots and numbers on their wait lists? Community Academy 1, for example has 34 seats and 42 on the list... Can someone help me understand this? |
I'm surprised Basis only has 1 on it's wait list for 5th grade. |
Thanks so much for posting this, OP. I agree that it's a great document and shows the charters off well.
One question, though: any guesses as to why most schools report 0 available seats? I'm guessing it's because they didn't know at the time of the posting and just put "0," but Oh, it would be so nice to know how many slots aren't for siblings...not that it would help our chances. Arg. There's got to be a word in German for "increasing your hope based on data that doesn't really prove anything." |
You are not shut out until school starts and you don't have a seat. In the next few weeks, seats will open up.... |
The first 2 numbers are pretty much meaningless. Scroll further to the right and see the breakout for each grade. A negative number means that's how many are on the wait list. A positive means that many are currently available. You can sort by grade as well. Just click on the column name (actually the 3 lines to the right of the column name) and indicate whether you want to sort ascending or descending. So, if you want to see the PK3 schools with the biggest wait lists, click on PK3 and sort ascending. If you want to see which schools have available PK3 spots, click on PK3 and sort descending. |
Thanks! |
Thanks for that tip. I sorted the PK3 field to see what school had the longest waiting list...Two Rivers PCS with 563 on the waiting list, whoa. I'm glad they have shared this data. I'm also curious what the 0 seats available means - that 0 seats have opened up? There are a LOT of schools with no seats open...I wonder if many of the waiting lists will move AT ALL. |
The 0 seats means they have 0 seats available in the entire school. Those 2 first numbers are aggregates across all grades. "Number of Seats Available" are the total number available for all grades. "Number of Names on Waiting List" is the total for all grades. That means you can seem to have both seats available and also names on the waiting list. If a school has 5 seats available in 5th grade, but also 15 names on the waiting list for PK3, you might see 5 seats available AND 15 names on the waiting list. That's why it's much more valuable to look at the individual grade you're interested in. |
Why is LAMB not on this list? |
