Christianity and Anti-semitism

How can someone be a Christian and anti-Semitic?

Do they not see the contradiction?

My mother is Catholic. My brother-in-law is jewish from israel. He says my mother is anti-semitic, because the christians believe the jews killed Jesus.

Just reporting here - makes no sense to me.

Which is doubly stupid since the Jews did not kill Jesus. Over all these years surely that must be common knowledge.

The opposite of love is not hate, it is ignorance.

I have always found this odd as well. How can you hate your own ancestors and your own god? How can you think that your Jewish founder and lord would approve of pograms and inquisitions against his own people? I never understood this.

Most of all hatred of other groups is based on fear and ignorance. Your Catholic mom didn't pay attention in CCD or church. Pilate sentenced Jesus, a Roman soldier pierced His side. It was a secular death sentence for being a revolutionary not the punishment for blasphemy that Jewish leaders desired. I'm Catholic and was married to an agnostic Jew. I knew more abut his family's faith tradition than he did.

Isn't it more like your bil is anti-catholic?

I had a coworker (catholic, but I can't say whether that's relevant) who had no clue about the connection between Judaism & Christianity. Actual quote: "Wait, you mean the Jews came *first*?!" Somehow it never clicked with her that the entire Old Testament was Jewish scripture.

That degree of ignorance might not lead to anti-Semitism, but it certainly does nothing to prevent it.

As a serious catholic, I absolutely don't understand it either.

Probably baptised and then never went to Mass let alone attended religious education as a child . Even at 3, my DC knew Jesus was a Jew.

of course Jews killed Jesus. The Romans carried out the execution but it was 100% because of the Jewish leaders and religious court. Pontius Pilate asked them to spare Jesus, then finally washed his hands of the matter.

that is no reason to be anti-semitic, but don't play semantics ....

Oh sure. Jews invented crucifixion. And our soldiers and army governed Jerusalem at that time. Maybe YOU shouldn't play semantics.

Pilate tried to substitute a murderer instead of Jesus but the Jewish leaders said no.

But for the Jews, Jesus would not be executed. The Romans carried out the sentence.

I'm happy to say that both the local Jewish leadership and the Roman authorities combined to kill Jesus.

Granting your point, isn't there a big difference between "local Jewish leaders" and "the Jews", and mightn't ignoring that distinction be a major cause of anti[semitism?
