GDS kids high % obesity?

I really can't get over the fact that GDS does not have a cafeteria and yet charges 30k tuition. Everyday, anytime of day, apparently, upper schoolers (MANY of them overweight) clomp there over-sized bodies across a public parking lot to the Safeway to purchase fatty, sugar laden food. The thinner ones wipe the crumbs and grease off their face and hands onto their $$$ hipster clothing. It's really funny, in a sad way. How could they have built their newish facility with no cafeteria? Are parent's this desperate for some kind of fakey status? Flame away---but a lot of the alums and current students are very overweight. Couple that with the fact that sports are not very good there and boy, why have people bought into this? 10 years ago GDS was a yoga studio/crash pad apartment on MacAurthur Blvd where kids did bong hit in the hallways....

Can't you come up with some other criticism or critique....something relevant like perhaps the quality of the educational experience (which is probably what most parents are interested in knowing)? No one is asking you to apply or cough up $30K. Sounds like you need to be in a yoga studio right now.

OP's post is a little mean-spirited, but to be honest, the cafeteria situation was one reason why I chose not to send my children to GDS. I used to live near the high school and I was appalled to see what the kids ate for lunch. It is surprising that the school did not build a cafeteria or find another way to serve healthy lunches. Teaching kids to eat right and get proper exercise should be part of any good curriculum.

Aren't the Sidwell kids also allowed off campus (in high school) for lunch?

Under certain circumstances, the Sidwell kids are allowed to go off-campus for lunch. The difference is that Sidwell offers a healthy lunch option on campus. The GDS kids have to go off campus.

Can't they bring lunch? What I'm really wondering is how significant the difference is in practice. Do kids at both high schools go out for lunch most of the time, or is that a relatively rare thing at Sidwell?
