Embryo Donation?

Anonymous
Has any one here donated their embryos? Thoughts? Experiences?

To someone else or to research? We have a bunch of extra frozen blasts and when we are sure we are done having kids we will donate them to research

I am donating them to research. I'm older and apparently my embryos are not as in demand (fertilized when I was 39). If I were younger I would most certainly donate them to a couple in need.

It's tough because I feel very attached to the embryos - they are part of the cohort of my twins. At the same time, DH and I are most certainly done having babies.

We may not be done having kids, but when we are sure, we will donate to another couple. We would seek an open donation because we would like for the kids (genetic siblings) to be able to know each other. We are older too, but the embryos are DE and high quality.

It's a tough decision for sure. If you are thinking about donating them to another couple, there is a site out there with some good info on the process. http://www.embryoadoption.org/donors/index.cfm

The thing about this link and anything that refers to embryo donation as "embryo adoption" is that there is an ideology behind it. An embryo is not a person. I say this as someone who is pro-choice, yet who very much wants to give my excess frozen embryos to another couple. You can have a lot of say in who gets the embryos, you can (and should) have attorney representation and a contract drawn up to protect yourself and specify things that are important to you. You do not need to go to a religion-based organization that most likely opposes and is working politically to end IVF because it's a procedure that creates excess embryos.

The embryos have the potential to become a person. Even if every single one was transferred, not all would take. It is not adoption.
